Dark Horse Comics and writer Zack Kaplan have been consistently creating successful comics, and they’re continuing that streak with a new deal for three new series. The first of these, called Only The Savage Are Left, is a story about monsters, those who hunt them, and a surprising love story. It’s scheduled to be released later this year, and we’re excited to give you an exclusive first look!
The creative team behind Only The Savage Are Left – Kaplan, Stefano Raffaele, Thiago Rocha, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou – presents a story that begins with a highly contagious virus called the teratavirus. While humanity initially manages to get the virus under control, things quickly worsen. The unique nature of the teratavirus – the only cure is to kill another infected person – ultimately leads to the downfall of civilization.

Only The Savage Are Left Is Also A Post Apocalyptic Love Story

Although the virus is terrifying and causes widespread disruption, the story also focuses on a hopeful core – a young man named Ryder. The preview shows Ryder and his partner enjoying happier times, and when the city falls to the virus, they manage to escape, hoping to put it all behind them.

The story really kicks into high gear when the woman Ryder cares for vanishes. He immediately ventures out into this harsh, unforgiving world to find her, and honestly, it’s a gripping journey. What I found most compelling wasn’t just the physical danger – which is definitely present – but the moral questions it raises. How far would you go to save someone you love? And at what cost? It makes you really think about what it means to stay human when everything is trying to strip that away from you. You can read the official synopsis for more details, but trust me, this film digs deep.
A deadly virus has turned people into monsters worldwide. The only way to stop the infection is to kill another infected person. This story follows a peaceful young man who leaves his safe community to search for his lost love. He’s forced to navigate a dangerous world filled with both monsters and those hunting them. It’s a thrilling fight for survival that challenges what it means to stay true to your values when everything falls apart.
Only The Savage Are Left #1 will hit comic stores on June 3, 2026.
