Mike Flanagan has become a leading name in horror over the past ten years, largely due to his work with Netflix. He’s written, produced, and directed five critically acclaimed series for the streaming platform: The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Each series is unique and compelling, drawing inspiration from classic horror stories. Flanagan often uses the same actors across his projects, creating a connected universe for fans to enjoy.
Mike Flanagan has a distinct style, and his work often features truly remarkable moments. His TV series are full of standout scenes – from powerful, emotionally charged conversations and shocking plot twists to unforgettable monologues – that showcase his talent.
The Fall of the House of Usher Ends on a Bittersweet Note
Despite being a horror series filled with disturbing deaths, one of the most powerful moments comes from a surprisingly touching conversation. In the eighth episode, “The Raven,” Lenore Usher comes face-to-face with Verna, who intends to end her life. Before doing so, Verna reveals that Lenore’s mother established the Lenore Foundation, a charity that continues to help countless people even after Lenore is gone – a truly inspiring legacy.
After sharing these words, Verna touches Lenore, and she dies peacefully, as if simply falling asleep. Carla Gugino’s performance as Verna is surprisingly maternal, a departure from her earlier roles, and it brings a gentle touch to an otherwise unsettling moment. This adds to a show already known for its disturbing content.
The Midnight Club Does Great Pagan Horror
Facing a worsening cancer diagnosis, Ilonka agrees to let Shasta – who is actually Julia Jayne – perform the Five Goddesses ritual. But just before drinking the ritual tea, Ilonka discovers it’s poisoned. Julia attempts to make her drink it, but Dr. Stanton intervenes and saves Ilonka. Julia escapes, leaving Ilonka shaken with a chilling smile. This marks the end of Julia’s story arc.
While the series features plenty of startling moments, the ritual scene truly stands out because it delivers horror in a unique way. It definitively establishes Shasta as a villain and forces Ilonka to accept that magic isn’t a simple cure-all. The scene is unpredictable leading up to its start, unfolding with a suspenseful, drawn-out tension that ultimately leads to a heartbreaking outcome.
Father Paul Delivers a Creepy Homily in Midnight Mass
Okay, so the story really kicks off on Good Friday, with the whole town gathering for mass. Father Paul gives the sermon, and at first, it’s all smiles and friendly vibes. But things get weird fast. His speech starts getting really intense, almost aggressive, and nobody bats an eye – not even him, because you quickly realize this guy is seriously fanatical. And then, get this, Mildred Gunning starts looking younger right as he’s talking! It’s just the first of a bunch of totally bizarre things that start happening on the island, and it immediately grabs your attention. As a movie buff, I was hooked!
Mike Flanagan’s Midnight Mass is notable for its deliberate pacing and strong performances. This particular scene, though only five minutes long, showcases Hamish Linklater’s exceptional acting ability. His monologue, about hardship and redemption, builds to a fever pitch. Remarkably, the scene relies on performance alone – there are no special effects, sudden shocks, or dramatic music – yet it’s incredibly gripping and kept viewers on the edge of their seats.
The Haunting of Bly Manor Is Also a Love Story
The final episode of The Haunting of Bly Manor shows Dani saving Flora by letting the ghost of the Lady of the Lake possess her. This selfless act has consequences, becoming a problem nine years later. Dani starts seeing Viola’s reflection and understands the only way to truly protect Jamie from the ghost is to drown herself at Bly Manor. We then learn the story is being told by an older Jamie, who reveals she secretly wished the Lady of the Lake would claim her, but ultimately, “the lady in the lake was also Dani. And Dani wouldn’t let that happen; she would never.”
While The Haunting of Bly Manor is a ghost story, at its heart it’s a deeply emotional love story between Dani and Jamie. Therefore, the most powerful scene is the heartbreaking conclusion of their relationship. Dani transforming into the Lady of the Lake and becoming a ghost that haunts Jamie – but intentionally avoids pulling her into the supernatural – is a devastatingly tragic ending that truly resonated with viewers.
The Haunting of Hill House Has Great Monologues
While the show is well-made overall, its most powerful moments are definitely the emotional ones. The standout scene is the final reunion between the Crain siblings and Nell, a roughly ten-minute sequence filled with both heartbreaking lows and uplifting highs. Victoria Pedretti’s performance is particularly memorable, delivering poignant lines about time, the Red Room, and the enduring love within the Crain family, culminating in the beautiful sentiment: “I loved you completely. And you loved me the same. That’s all. The rest is confetti.”
This scene is particularly strong because it finally answers major questions about the series, such as the nature of the Red Room and how the timeline functions. Beyond that, it’s a deeply satisfying moment for viewers. Many worried about a character’s fate, but the scene clarifies things, reassuring fans who were upset by events earlier in the series. Victoria Pedretti’s powerful emotional performance elevates the scene, making it a standout and a favorite among fans of Flanagan’s work.
