The most recent episode of The Boys Season 5 featured Homelander being manipulated by a disturbing vision of Madelyn Stillwell, urging him to be seen as a god. This aired shortly after Donald Trump shared – and then deleted – an AI-created image portraying him as Jesus Christ. Fans quickly noticed the similarities between the show and Trump’s post, and the series’ showrunner has since commented on the connection.
Eric Kripke promises Homelander’s God plot and Trump’s AI Jesus are coincidental
Eric Kripke stated that the resemblance between Homelander’s portrayal as a god-like figure and Donald Trump’s AI-generated post was simply a coincidence.
The creator of Supernatural told TVLine they wrote this episode two years ago, before the election even happened. They explained that the idea came up while discussing Homelander’s increasing mental instability throughout the show, and how his story was leading to the reveal of his ultimate form.
Kripke initially thought the idea was wild. He worried viewers would feel Homelander had become too over-the-top and unbelievable. However, he realized reality often surpasses fiction, and the show continues to reflect that.
Kripke explained he was frustrated by how often real-world events seemed to be imitating the show’s satire, saying it was “honestly exhausting.” He also stated he wished the Trump administration would stop using the show to promote themselves.
In a recent conversation with Polygon, showrunner Eric Kripke explained that about a month ago, he cautioned his team during a marketing discussion to be careful about suggesting Homelander might start calling himself God, as it seemed extreme. He worried the public would feel the character had crossed a line. Kripke pointed out that their current situation – dealing with the fallout from a viral post comparing Homelander to Donald Trump – highlights how difficult it is to create satire that surpasses real-world events. He essentially said, ‘It’s hard to be more outlandish than reality right now.’
The first three episodes of The Boys Season 5 are now available to watch. New episodes will be released every Wednesday until May 20, 2026. The series is adapted from the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson.
