Anime’s Greatest Movies Are Returning to Theaters

Anime films are increasingly popular in theaters, and the huge success of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle demonstrates just how much the medium has grown. With hundreds of millions in earnings, Demon Slayer has paved the way for many other anime series to have theatrical releases. Now, some of the most beloved anime movies ever made are returning to North American cinemas. Studio Ghibli has always occasionally re-released its films, but this year’s lineup represents one of the biggest theatrical comebacks for the studio in a long time.

Good news for animation fans! Studio Ghibli announced that seven of its most popular movies will be shown in North American theaters this year. This is part of the annual Studio Ghibli Fest, which brings the studio’s beloved films back to the big screen. Here’s how Studio Ghibli describes the event:

STUDIO GHIBLI FEST 2026 begins this June with a showing of the beloved classic, Ponyo. The festival will also celebrate several important anniversaries, including the 20th anniversary of Goro Miyazaki’s Tales from Earthsea, which is joining the festival for the first time, and the 35th anniversary of Isao Takahata’s Only Yesterday. The lineup also features the 40th anniversary of Castle in the Sky and concludes with the 25th anniversary of Hayao Miyazaki’s Academy Award®-winning Spirited Away. All seven films in the STUDIO GHIBLI FEST 2026 will be shown with both original Japanese audio and English dubbing, plus each screening will include special bonus content.
