The DC Universe is constantly evolving, and recently, one of its long-standing heroes received a surprising power boost. After a tough battle against Darkseid, a tournament was held to find someone capable of defeating him. Superman ultimately won, but instead of keeping the powerful Alpha Energy to himself, he shared it with everyone who competed. This resulted in some receiving prophetic visions, and others gaining completely new and unexpected abilities.
When the DC Next Level initiative truly kicked off, the Titans fell into their usual pattern: battling familiar foes and dealing with recurring personal issues. However, as revealed in New Titans #33, the team was secretly kidnapped and trapped in a fake world where they were forced to repeat past triumphs, betrayals, and painful experiences endlessly. Nightwing eventually broke them free, but this reality is more complex than it seems, and it all connects to a recent enhancement one of the Titans received.
Cyborg Has Split Into Two Selves: One Human, One Robot

In New Titans #34, the established Titans team is shocked by the unexpected appearance of a new group – Jon Kent, Batgirl, Wonder Girl, and Red Devil. The newcomers attempt to explain themselves, but the original Titans are still reeling from the recent losses of Arsenal, Donna, Raven, and Beast Boy, and quickly become enraged. A large-scale fight erupts between the two teams, and Nightwing is unable to prevent it.
During the battle, Nightwing learns from Batgirl that the team’s coffee was secretly making them think the simulated reality they were in was real. Dick presses for explanations, and just then, Victor Stone—without his usual cybernetic parts—appears. This stops the fight cold, as the Cyborg who’d been fighting alongside them suddenly reveals he’s entirely robotic. After Jon briefly shuts down the robot, Victor explains that this transformation happened soon after the Omega Tournament.
Exposure to a massive surge of Alpha Energy triggered a response within Cyborg’s connection to the Mother Box. This caused a split, separating Victor Stone from his cybernetic parts and restoring both him and the robotic components to complete, independent forms. Victor is now fully human, while his former cybernetic self—now a powerful, sentient being—is capable of incredible feats, even creating an entire world to protect his allies. This robotic Cyborg will maintain the Titans’ containment, acting independently and using whatever force is needed.
What Cyborg’s New Upgrade Means for the DCU

Cyborg’s experienced some strange transformations before. He briefly merged with Beast Boy at Titans Academy, and a virus called Grid once hijacked his robotic parts during the Forever Evil storyline. However, this is the first time his human side and his cybernetic components have become completely separate individuals. While it’s an interesting concept, it poses a significant threat to the Titans.
Cyborg was already a remarkably powerful hero, though often overlooked, because of the advanced technology from Apokolips integrated into his body. That technology became even more potent when Superman shared his Alpha Energy. However, when separated from Vic Stone, the technology lacks his compassion and judgment. It now operates solely on deeply ingrained instructions within its programming. Its primary directive is to protect the Titans, and with its immense power, it will do anything necessary to ensure their safety.
It’s good that Vic doesn’t seem too upset, especially with the New Titans supporting him. This situation definitely makes you think about what happens next for Cyborg. Will he retire, find a way to merge the technology back into himself, or try to reason with his robotic counterpart? This is a major turning point for Cyborg, and while it’s unclear where the New Titans storyline is headed, I’m eager to see how Vic deals with this change.
