Humphrey has definitely been dealing with a lot of stress recently on Beyond Paradise.
Suddenly finding himself at The Hub and meeting his new, rather unpleasant boss, Mr. Smith, Humphrey received two worrying updates: Shipton Abbott police had lost their key contact, Chief Superintendent Woods, and budget cuts meant he’d have to let someone on his team go.
But who to let go?
Asking Humphrey to let Esther, Kelby, and Margo go is incredibly difficult for him, almost like asking a parent to give up a child. They’re not just a strong team at work—actor Zahra Ahmadi explained to TopMob that everyone contributes significantly, and losing even one person would be deeply felt—they also have close personal relationships with each other.
She described them as a close-knit group, saying they function more like a family than just friends. Everyone has a specific role to play, which is key to their success and how well they work together.
Humphrey understands it’s difficult to let go of a valued colleague, but he also recognizes how that loss will affect the police department’s ability to serve the community, which is his primary concern.
Things have been difficult lately, and Anne really felt that during her recent conversation with the detective.
Martha’s mother, now a local councillor, met Mr. Smith while golfing, and he offered her a position on the police and crime panel. She’d been working in the office, learning from Humphrey, getting to know the team, and helping out – much to Margo’s annoyance.
Humphrey wished she’d stay away from his job, but he didn’t voice that opinion.
It’s still unclear whether Anne will be an asset or a liability, but we suspect she might cause more problems than she solves.

As the episode was wrapping up and everyone else had gone home, Humphrey remained to finish some work. That’s when his mother-in-law showed up and asked to speak with him privately.
She said the topic was sensitive and involved James Smith. That was all it took for Humphrey to become upset and end the discussion.
He said that if James Smith asks anything else of him, he wants to be warned beforehand – maybe with a loud signal. And if Smith is pressuring him to quickly fire someone because of the extremely limited budget, he jokingly told him to believe he’s dead.
Deep breaths, Humphrey.
Anne worried he was about to lose control, so she didn’t press the issue and quickly walked away, having rarely seen her son-in-law react like that.
But what, pray tell, was she about to say?

It’s hard to say exactly what Anne’s news is, and we could speculate for hours, but her behavior and the fact that she called it “delicate” suggest it’s a personal issue Mr. Smith prefers to keep confidential.
And that could work in Humphrey’s favour.
Despite trying to save money and protect his team, Humphrey hasn’t been able to satisfy Mr. Smith, who is determined to make a decision. Even if Humphrey could find other ways to cut costs, his boss wouldn’t change his mind – he’s more interested in being in charge. Humphrey’s attempts to avoid his boss have only made things worse.
So, will it be Anne, armed with some “delicate” news about Mr Smith, who saves the day?
With Humphrey’s decision now imminent, they need to act quickly.
