As a huge fan of The Boys, I was really glad to see Ryan back in action in Season 5, specifically starting with Episode 3. And let me tell you, he does something incredible – something only one other character with powers has ever pulled off on the show! After everything that happened with Grace and Butcher at the end of Season 4, Ryan’s a bit of a loose cannon. You can tell he’s actively avoiding Homelander and Vought, which the show makes pretty clear right from the start, and honestly, after learning the truth about Homelander, I totally get it. Just a heads-up, what I’m about to say reveals major plot points from Season 5, Episode 3, so be warned – spoilers ahead!
In The Boys, Ryan is still torn about his relationships with both his father figures, but the recent events will likely push him to decide where he stands with Homelander. After initially agreeing to help Butcher, Ryan clashes with him again before finally facing off with Homelander. Their confrontation turns physical, and Homelander nearly kills Ryan. Despite losing the fight, Ryan manages to do something only one other super-powered individual has ever accomplished. While he’s not as strong as Homelander yet, this moment hints that he has the potential to become very powerful with further development and training.
Ryan Makes Homelander Bleed in The Boys Season 5, Episode 3

Ryan’s attack on Homelander is remarkable – he actually manages to hit him a few times, and even makes him bleed by punching him in the nose. While it doesn’t seriously hurt Homelander, it’s rare to see him injured at all. Most opponents in The Boys either can’t get close enough or aren’t strong enough to leave a mark. The fact that Ryan lands any blows at all shows just how powerful he is, and drawing blood is especially noteworthy. Even when facing opponents like Soldier Boy, Butcher, and Hughie, Homelander usually only sustains minor injuries, like a bruise.
Given how Homelander reacts after Ryan gives him a bloody nose, that moment clearly affects him. He only gets that angry again once more throughout the series. While Ryan isn’t the first to hurt Homelander, it doesn’t happen often, making both times Homelander bleeds stand out in viewers’ minds.
Only 1 Other Supe Has Broken Homelander’s Skin in The Boys

Besides Ryan, Queen Maeve is the only other person we’ve seen injure Homelander. In the final fight of Season 3, she actually punches him in the face, causing his nose to bleed. She clearly knows how unusual this is, and looks proud of it. While she doesn’t maintain the advantage for long, she proves herself as a remarkably powerful supe by being able to fight Homelander so effectively. Now, after Episode 3 of Season 5, Ryan has achieved the same feat. This suggests there’s a possibility the show’s heroes could defeat Homelander if they work together, even though none of them can beat him alone.
