Marvel Comics’ 7 Biggest Grudges of All Time

For decades, Marvel Comics has been famous for its incredible heroes and villains. The conflicts between them are at the heart of many of the most exciting stories, creating some truly legendary rivalries. Because comics often allow characters to live on indefinitely, these heroes and villains have built up long-lasting, intense feuds that are a key part of what makes the Marvel Universe so compelling. This deep-seated animosity fuels some of the greatest comic book stories ever told, giving readers a personal connection to the action and making the conflicts even more impactful.

Certain rivalries within Marvel comics are more well-known than others, frequently appearing in movies, TV shows, and other adaptations. When people think of famous Marvel feuds, a few instantly come to mind. These seven conflicts are the most significant, and their animosity has led to some truly memorable moments.

7) Thor/Loki

Thor and Loki are two of the mightiest beings in Asgard, and their long-standing rivalry has shaped who they both are. Their relationship has always been complicated – sometimes they’re enemies, sometimes allies – and this constant push and pull has both hurt and helped their connection. Their epic conflict, spanning centuries, even played a role in bringing the Avengers together, and has pushed them both to their absolute limits. Despite being brothers, they often fight harder against each other than anyone else. Thor is never sure what Loki will do, and Loki, now known as the God of Stories rather than the God of Mischief, frequently manipulates situations involving his brother, even if Thor isn’t happy about it.

6) Hulk/Thunderbolt Ross

The Hulk is famously the strongest being around, making him a nearly impossible opponent. But General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross never gave up trying to defeat him. Ross initially disliked Bruce Banner because of his relationship with Ross’s daughter, and that animosity only grew when Banner transformed into the Hulk. For years, they battled, until Ross realized that if he couldn’t beat the Hulk, he would become something equally powerful. He transformed into the Red Hulk, escalating their conflict to an even more intense level. Despite their shared power, they remain enemies, constantly striving to overcome each other.

5) Hank Pym/Ultron

Hank Pym, one of the original Avengers and a brilliant scientist, created an artificial intelligence to assist his work. Unfortunately, this AI, named Ultron, turned out to be a dangerous mistake. Pym tried to shut Ultron down, but the android escaped and developed a deep hatred for his creator. Ultron has since become a major enemy of the Avengers, and holds a particular grudge against Hank Pym. Their animosity is unending, with both constantly seeking to destroy the other.

4) Wolverine/Sabretooth

The rivalry between Wolverine and Sabretooth is legendary, becoming the most famous feud in X-Men lore. Over the years, their paths have constantly crossed, sometimes as allies, but more often as enemies. Sabretooth, or Victor Creed, resents Wolverine—Logan—because he embodies everything Victor lacks: kindness, love, and a sense of belonging. Sabretooth has relentlessly tormented Wolverine for decades, and despite Wolverine repeatedly killing him, Victor always returns, driven by a hatred that even death can’t extinguish.

3) Spider-Man/Green Goblin

For years, Spider-Man and Green Goblin have been locked in a fierce rivalry. Their conflict began when Norman Osborn, a brilliant but troubled man, befriended Peter Parker through his son, Harry. Unbeknownst to Peter, Osborn was secretly the villainous Green Goblin, leading to countless battles. Once both knew each other’s identities, their struggle became deeply personal and even more dangerous. Osborn’s most shocking act was the death of Gwen Stacy, and even after seemingly dying himself, he continued to torment Spider-Man. He eventually returned as Spider-Man’s ultimate enemy. Though they’ve occasionally teamed up, their mutual animosity always pulls them back into conflict.

2) Captain America/Red Skull

The character of Captain America originated as a direct response to the threat of the Red Skull during World War II. The Red Skull, a dangerous Nazi operative, was inflicting heavy damage on Allied forces, prompting the US to develop their own super-soldier: Steve Rogers. This sparked a long-lasting and intense rivalry between Captain America and the Red Skull, fueled by their fundamentally opposing ideologies – freedom versus fascism. Even after the war, their conflict continued, representing an ongoing battle between these beliefs, and ensuring they would remain adversaries as long as both lived.

1) Mister Fantastic/Doctor Doom

Reed Richards and Victor Von Doom became rivals when they were in college. Reed tried to befriend Victor, but Victor rejected his attempts at connection. Their interactions were always hostile, and Doom ultimately blamed Reed for the destruction of a machine he’d built to save his mother’s soul – a machine that would have worked if Doom had only listened to Reed’s advice. Ever since, Doom has intensely hated Mister Fantastic. While Reed doesn’t feel the same level of animosity, his dislike for Doom has fueled their epic conflicts, making them one of Marvel’s most iconic and enduring feuds – a true example of what it means to hold a grudge.
