Fans generally loved the first season of the Scrubs revival, but many wished they’d seen more of one particular character. Fortunately, the upcoming second season seems to be addressing that issue. Scrubs returned in February 2026 with its tenth season overall, and the first of the revival run, bringing back favorites like Zach Braff as J.D., Donald Faison as Turk, Sarah Chalke as Elliot, Ken Jenkins as Kelso, and John C. McGinley as Dr. Cox. The only significant criticism of the first season was the limited appearance of one of these five main characters.
The season finale suggests John C. McGinley will have a significantly larger part in the second season, which is great news for the Scrubs reboot.
Dr. Cox Will Finally Be Back on Scrubs in the Bigger Role He Deserves

John C. McGinley has previously explained his limited role in the first season of the Scrubs reboot was due to scheduling issues. He’s now optimistic that those conflicts have resolved, allowing him to participate more fully in season two and reprise his significant role in the storyline as originally planned. This is particularly relevant given the events of the season finale and how they impact his character’s relationship with J.D.
The season began with J.D. returning to Sacred Heart Hospital after several years working as a personal doctor for clients. To his surprise, Dr. Cox appointed him Chief of Medicine, putting him in charge of the incoming interns. Turk also started a new role as Chief of Surgery. Elliot’s return created tension, as she and J.D. had recently divorced. The season ended with a major focus on Dr. Cox, after he collapsed following a visit in the second-to-last episode.
In the season finale, J.D. discovers Dr. Cox is seriously ill with microscopic polyangiitis, a dangerous autoimmune disease. Despite J.D.’s efforts to help, Dr. Cox’s condition worsens, forcing him to confide in Jordan and prepare for a fight for his life. This sets up a major storyline for the second season, where Dr. Cox battles the illness and J.D. grapples with his emotions surrounding it.
Season 2 of Scrubs could have even more exciting developments. Not only might John C. McGinley appear more often, but a fan-favorite character made a welcome return in the finale: Neil Flynn as the Janitor. Now the chief custodian for the joint commission, he visited Sacred Heart for a safety check. This also introduces a new storyline, as the Janitor’s son is now Maintenance Guy (played by Darcy Michael), and he’s poised to become J.D.’s new rival.
