Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Has Critics & Audiences in Disagreement on Rotten Tomatoes

The story has been adapted for film many times since it first appeared in 1932. Lee Cronin, director of Evil Dead Rise, is the most recent filmmaker to reimagine it.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy isn’t connected to the previous Universal monster movies, especially since the studio stopped making them after the 2017 film starring Tom Cruise. This new version offers a fresh take on the classic story, but it’s received mixed reactions, with critics and viewers disagreeing about its quality on Rotten Tomatoes.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Has a Mixed Reception

The movie started with promising early reviews, almost earning a “fresh” rating. But as more people shared their opinions, it quickly became poorly received, mirroring the state of the character in the film. Currently, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy has a 45% rating based on 121 reviews.

As a horror fan, I’ve been hearing that this new take on a classic story definitely ups the ante with some really intense gore and makes the characters’ struggles feel more personal. However, a lot of people are saying that while it starts scary, it unfortunately drags on for too long and loses some of its impact. It’s a bit of a mixed bag – exciting at first, but ultimately feels overextended.

Despite the critics’ mixed feelings, audiences generally enjoyed the film, giving it a 77% approval rating. Many praised its intense scares and fresh take on a classic monster, with one reviewer calling it ‘epic horror.’ While some felt the movie was a bit too long, most agreed the jump scares and gore were effective.

The Mummy Keeps Thriving

Universal Pictures first introduced The Mummy in 1932, featuring a memorable performance by Boris Karloff. The character has been played by various actors in several films over the years. The franchise was then successfully revived in the 1990s by Stephen Sommers.

The first Mummy movie came out in 1999 and starred Brendan Fraser as Rick O’Connell, an adventurer, and Rachel Weisz as Evelyn “Evy” Carnahan. The story begins when they unintentionally bring a mummy back to life. Fraser and Weisz both returned for the 2001 sequel, but when Fraser appeared in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008, Maria Bello had taken over Weisz’s role.

Despite being released almost twenty years ago, The Mummy series isn’t over yet. Not only is a new Mummy film from Lee Cronin in the works, but a fourth installment featuring Brendan Fraser is also planned. Directed by Radio Silence, The Mummy 4 is currently in early development and scheduled for a theatrical release on May 19, 2028, with Rachel Weisz expected to reprise her role as Evy.

We really wanted to focus on classic horror, going back to what made it scary in the first place. Think of the original Boris Karloff films from the 1930s – that’s the kind of horror we were aiming for, but with a modern twist. That’s why we contacted Lee so early in the process. We believed his creative vision perfectly matched what we needed to make this project stand out.
