Warner Bros. is heavily investing in anime, creating both original series and adapting its popular characters for the anime format. We’ve already seen anime versions of Batman with films like Batman Ninja and Batman Ninja Vs. Yakuza League, and The Lord of The Rings: The War of The Rohirrim brought Middle-earth to anime. Now, even the Suicide Squad is getting an anime-style Isekai, and Scooby-Doo and the gang will soon join the fun with their own anime series.
The anime series Go-Go Mystery Machine, featuring Shaggy and Scooby traveling to Japan, was announced in 2024. Instead of the usual ghosts and monsters, they’ll be encountering Japanese Yokai, and the show will introduce new characters. While details have been scarce since the initial announcement two years ago, Warner Bros. Animation president Sam Register recently confirmed that the Scooby-Doo anime is still being developed.
Scooby-Doo Will Return

At a recent industry panel, Register explained how Scooby-Doo allows the studio to creatively update its older characters. He mentioned the Mystery Incorporated series, which explored a love triangle between Shaggy, Velma, and Scooby, as an example of taking risks. He also revealed he’s currently working on an anime project and that they’re always looking for characters they can reimagine in new and interesting ways.
If you’re not familiar with Go-Go Mystery Machine, here’s what the anime series is about, according to Warner Bros: Shaggy and Scooby-Doo are in Japan enjoying the local food when they accidentally release a bunch of playful but troublesome mythical creatures. With help from Scooby’s uncle, Daisuke-Doo, a magical friend named Etsuko, and a gadget expert called Toshiro, Scooby and Shaggy try to solve the mystery and recapture all the monsters.
It’s a bit surprising to learn that the upcoming Japanese adventure isn’t the only Scooby-Doo anime being developed! Earlier this year, Scooby-Doo Gokko was announced, similar to the Tom & Jerry Gokko series. The “Gokko” franchise reimagines beloved characters as adorable, miniature “chibi” versions of themselves. As anime continues to grow in popularity, it will be fascinating to see which other Warner Bros. characters get the anime treatment, particularly with the potential merger with Paramount.
Netflix is bringing Scooby-Doo to life with a new live-action series! The streaming service has announced the cast for the show, with McKenna Grace as Daphne, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred. Comedic actor Paul Walter Hauser will also be a regular cast member. While a release date hasn’t been announced, fans are eager to find out who – or what – will play Scooby-Doo himself, with speculation about whether the character will be a real dog or created using computer graphics.
