Sabretooth is considered Wolverine’s arch-enemy and remains one of the most well-known mutant villains. Originally introduced as a hired gun fighting Iron Fist, he later became a key member of the Marauders, immediately establishing a fierce rivalry with Wolverine. Over time, the true nature of Victor Creed has been revealed: a feral and incredibly dangerous mutant. His abilities – including a powerful healing factor, enhanced senses, razor-sharp claws and teeth, and superior strength – make him a formidable opponent. Interestingly, he’s even briefly allied with the X-Men and X-Factor, though always with his own agenda in mind.
Sabretooth is a popular villain who’s shown up in many different forms of media, like movies, cartoons, and video games. He’s been featured in countless comic books, but a few stand out as the very best. These seven stories are considered the highlights of Sabretooth’s comic book appearances and have helped make him the iconic character he is today.
7) Sabretooth (Vol. 4) #1-5

The Krakoa era brought significant changes to the world of Marvel’s mutants, and Sabretooth, though a minor player, was key to some events. He initially joined the mutant nation of Krakoa and participated in a mission with Mystique and Toad that involved killing humans, resulting in his imprisonment in the Pit. This leads into the excellent Sabretooth (Vol. 4) #1-5, written by Victor LaValle with art by Leonard Kirk. Doug Ramsey gave Creed control of the Pit, hoping to rehabilitate him, but Sabretooth was more cunning than anyone realized. When new mutants were sent to the Pit, he devised a plan to escape and get revenge. Many consider this series a standout achievement of the entire Krakoa era, offering a compelling take on the villain while also exploring the flaws of the American prison system.
6) “Killable”

As a huge Wolverine fan, one of the most impactful stories for me has always been the “Killable” arc from the fifth volume of his series. It’s only 13 issues, but it really shook things up – Logan actually lost his healing factor! The story follows him trying to prove he’s still a force to be reckoned with, and it ends with a truly brutal showdown with Sabretooth. What made it so great was seeing Sabretooth take over the mall built on the old Howlett estate and steal a really important sword. Their fight was one of the most intense and cold-blooded I’ve ever read – Sabretooth completely destroys Logan, and promises to make him suffer forever. Honestly, even though Sabretooth doesn’t show up until later in the story, it felt like his arc, and it was just perfect.
5) Wolverine (Vol. 2) #126-128

Wolverine and Sabretooth didn’t clash often before Wolverine gained his adamantium skeleton, but both characters appear in a memorable storyline. Issues #126-128 of Wolverine (Vol. 2), created by Chris Claremont and a team of artists, feature Sabretooth interrupting Wolverine’s wedding to Viper (it’s best to start with issue #126). He reveals a shocking secret that will have serious consequences for Wolverine. This story, set in the wild world of Madripoor, begins with a fantastic fight between the two, showcasing Sabretooth at his most powerful.
4) Uncanny X-Men #328/Sabretooth: In the Red Zone

This often-overlooked two-part story is truly excellent. Before the “Age of Apocalypse” storyline, Sabretooth was lobotomized by Wolverine and feigned being a mindless giant cat, kept in the Danger Room where he befriended Boom Boom. In Uncanny X-Men #328, by Scott Lobdell and Joe Madureira, he escapes and attempts to kill Boom Boom, resulting in one of his most impressive fights against Psylocke. The story continued in Sabretooth: In the Red Zone, by Fabian Nicieza and Gary Frank, with the original five X-Men pursuing him. While the plot is fairly straightforward, the story is elevated by its fantastic artwork, making it a hidden gem for comic fans. The tension and action really make this one stand out.
3) Uncanny X-Men #212-213

Issues #212-213 of Uncanny X-Men, created by Chris Claremont, Rick Leonardi, and Alan Davis, are considered a landmark event in Marvel history. These issues feature the very first fight between Wolverine and Sabretooth, immediately following the Morlock Massacre. The two-part battle is a thrilling and intensely physical showdown, widely regarded as one of the greatest fights in X-Men comics. The artwork in issue #213, by Alan Davis, is particularly celebrated, though Rick Leonardi’s work on issue #212 was also excellent. It’s a classic encounter and remains one of their most memorable battles.
2) Wolverine (Vol. 2) #90

Wolverine #90 is considered a standout issue, largely due to the story ‘Tooth.’ It features Logan’s return to the X-Mansion after losing his adamantium, only to find it deserted except for his imprisoned enemy, Sabretooth. Their tense encounter is filled with verbal jabs, and Logan struggles with the temptation to kill him. However, Sabretooth escapes, leading to their most intense and brutal fight ever – a true showcase of their mutual hatred. The issue is legendary, particularly its shocking cliffhanger which wasn’t resolved until after the ‘Age of Apocalypse’ storyline.
1) Wolverine (Vol. 2) #10

Chris Claremont, John Buscema, and Bill Sienkiewicz’s Wolverine (Vol. 2) #10 is a fantastic comic book – I’ve even bought it twice! The story jumps between the present and the past, revealing what happens on Logan’s birthday each year. Every year, Sabretooth seeks him out to cause trouble, so Logan tries his best to protect himself and those around him in Madripoor. We also see flashbacks to their very first fight, when Logan returned home to find his Native American girlfriend, Silver Fox, murdered by Creed. The resulting fight is brutal and teaches Logan a valuable lesson about combat. It’s a truly exceptional story, and the ideal Sabretooth tale for fans of the character.
