Since Disney bought Lucasfilm, the Star Wars universe has expanded dramatically with lots of new movies and TV shows. However, many planned projects have been cancelled along the way. These unmade projects are mostly films, including a trilogy planned by Rian Johnson and a separate movie developed by Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios. Some television shows were also scrapped, most notably Rangers of the New Republic, which was intended as a spin-off from The Mandalorian.
The series Rangers of the New Republic was announced in December 2020 during Disney’s investor presentation. It would have followed law enforcement officers of the New Republic as they battled the remaining forces of the Empire and other threats across the galaxy. Gina Carano was originally slated to return as Cara Dune, but the project was ultimately cancelled in 2021 by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. However, with the success of The Mandalorian and Grogu, the Star Wars universe now has another story ready to take its place.
The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s Connection to Rangers of the New Republic Explained

Lucasfilm has kept many details about the new season of The Mandalorian and Grogu under wraps, as usual, but some plot points have emerged. The latest trailer shows Din Djarin and Grogu working with the New Republic to hunt down former Imperial soldiers who are creating problems across the galaxy. They receive their assignments from Colonel Ward, a new character played by Sigourney Weaver. According to Odeon, a UK movie theater, Ward is a veteran of the Rebellion who now leads a group called the Adelphi Rangers.
The Adelphi Rangers aren’t new to the world of The Mandalorian and Grogu; we’ve seen them in other New Republic TV shows, with characters like Carson Teva and Trapper Wolf. So, it’s not a shock they’ll be in the upcoming film, but it is interesting to learn that Colonel Ward is connected to them. Many fans thought Weaver’s character would be a high-ranking official giving Din Djarin a new task, but now we know he’s actually working for the Rangers.
So, it turns out The Mandalorian and Grogu is filling a role originally intended for Rangers of the New Republic. Apparently, no scripts were ever actually written for that shelved series, but the idea was it would have followed characters like Cara Dune, tracking down and bringing to justice the remnants of the Empire – basically, a law enforcement show in the Star Wars universe. It was meant to be a key piece of the puzzle, one of the shows building towards Dave Filoni’s big New Republic movie. It’s interesting to see The Mandalorian taking on some of that responsibility now.
After the Rangers of the New Republic series was cancelled, some of its ideas were integrated into The Mandalorian. We saw this in Season 3 through Din Djarin’s interactions with Carson Teva. Teva first alerts the Mandalorians to the pirate threat on Navarro, and later Djarin offers to help track down remaining Imperials – essentially setting up the main storyline for The Mandalorian and Grogu. These scenes with Teva feel like they were originally intended for Rangers of the New Republic; Cara Dune could easily have handled the Gorian Shard situation or investigated Moff Gideon’s escape. Instead, that plot was given to Carson and Djarin.
Will Cara Dune Ever Reappear in the Star Wars Franchise?

Cara Dune was a popular, strong-willed character in the first two seasons of The Mandalorian. Plans were underway for a spinoff show centered around her, but those were canceled when Lucasfilm fired actress Gina Carano due to controversial posts she made on social media. As a result, the Rangers of the New Republic show was scrapped, and Cara Dune was removed from Season 3 of The Mandalorian. The show briefly explains her departure with a line of dialogue stating she now works with the New Republic Special Forces.
Gina Carano sued Disney and Lucasfilm in 2024, and the case was resolved a year later. Lucasfilm publicly stated they hoped to collaborate with Carano again, praising her dedication to her work (according to Variety). However, she hasn’t been rehired, so it’s unclear if she’ll return to her previous roles. Currently, she isn’t expected to be involved in either The Mandalorian and Grogu or the second season of Ahsoka.
Lucasfilm seems to be changing its focus, which could limit future chances for Gina Carano to return as Cara Dune. With no new live-action Star Wars shows currently planned after Season 2 of Ahsoka, the studio is now prioritizing theatrical releases. While several Star Wars movies are in development, they’re all set at different times within the established timeline. The most logical place for Cara Dune right now would be in Dave Filoni’s upcoming New Republic movie, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet. Disney is reportedly waiting to see how well The Mandalorian and Grogu performs before moving forward with that film.
The upcoming movie by Dave Filoni, set in the New Republic era, is expected to be a major conclusion to the storylines established in The Mandalorian and related shows, potentially focusing on the New Republic’s fight against Grand Admiral Thrawn. Given her background as a skilled soldier, it would be surprising if Cara Dune wasn’t involved in that conflict. She’s repeatedly demonstrated her combat abilities and would likely be eager to fight Thrawn’s forces. However, her appearance depends on whether Lucasfilm and actress Gina Carano can reach an agreement. If she doesn’t return to the screen, her story might continue in a book or comic book instead.
