DC Comics made a risky move when they rapidly aged Superman’s son, Jon Kent (also known as Superboy). Initially, fans adored the character as a young addition to the Superman story. But when he instantly became a teenager, many readers didn’t respond well. Since then, the character felt stuck. That’s now changing with the Superman Unlimited series, where Jon discovers his own heroic identity as Tomorrow Man, and importantly, the original, younger version of Jon Kent returns! However, bringing back young Jon might mean the end for the older version of the character.
In Superman Unlimited #11, the older Jon Kent battled the villain Master Txyz in a timeless dimension. Facing the realization that he hadn’t made a significant mark as Superman, Jon embraced a new heroic identity as Tomorrow Man. After defeating Master Txyz, Jon received a gift: his younger self, before his imprisonment on Earth-3 and the events that rapidly aged him. Superman Unlimited #12 explores the consequences of this major change to Jon’s history. Now that the original Jon Kent is back, the story focuses on what will become of the older Jon, who has been a presence in the DC Universe for seven years.
There’s Only Room for One Jon Kent in the Superman Family

When Master Txyz sent young Jon Kent to another time to protect him from years of suffering on Earth-3, the older Jon, now known as Tomorrow Man, found himself in a difficult position. With two versions of Jon existing at the same time, the timeline was dangerously unstable. To prevent a disaster, Tomorrow Man concealed his identity, making sure neither his younger self nor anyone else discovered who he was – knowledge that could erase him from existence. Though the original Jon Kent received a second chance at life, Tomorrow Man had to sacrifice everything – his past and everything he knew – to protect both his younger self and the timeline, giving young Jon the childhood he’d lost.
Lost and disoriented after traveling through time, young Superboy is comforted by Tomorrow Man, who helps him adjust to this new era. They reunite Superboy with his mother, Lois Lane, a deeply emotional moment fans have anticipated for years. However, this reunion creates a difficult situation for Tomorrow Man, as Lois doesn’t realize he is also her son. To protect his own existence and allow young Superboy to have a better life, Tomorrow Man makes the difficult choice to keep his identity a secret from everyone.
It’s as if the original Superboy has taken the place of the future Jon in his family’s history, leaving the older Jon feeling like an outsider. Even though Lois is kind to him, she doesn’t realize he’s her son. It’s deeply sad that Jon is now seen as a stranger by his own mother. By giving his younger self a better life, Jon has unintentionally ruined his current relationships with everyone he cares about. He’s gone from a budding hero finding his place in the world to being completely alone, unable to even face his family and friends.
Tomorrow Man’s Future Is a Mystery

From the beginning, Jon Kent’s story has revolved around his family, especially his father and the legacy of Superman. Losing that connection so suddenly puts him in a difficult position. While he’s poised to be important in the upcoming “Reign of the Superboys” storyline as Tomorrow Man, his future – and the future of his younger self – is now completely uncertain.
Completely alone, Tomorrow Man will probably have to create his own destiny, either on Earth or somewhere else. It’s very likely Jon will either leave our planet or travel to the future. If he ventures into space, he could become a galactic hero. Alternatively, if he goes forward in time, he might find a version of the Legion of Superheroes who have overcome Darkseid’s influence. DC originally aged up Jon Kent with the idea of him joining the Legion, so becoming Tomorrow Man and rejoining them would complete his story arc and allow him to form new bonds with other young heroes.
Having both Tomorrow Man and the young Superboy, Jon Kent, existing in the present day could create major problems for both characters. DC Comics likely won’t allow two versions of the same person to coexist for long, meaning one of them will probably have to disappear. This could happen if the current Superboy turns out to be a fake with hidden motives, or if Tomorrow Man makes the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the young Jon can become the primary hero. Ultimately, this situation means the DC Universe would lose one of its Superboys.
It’s a strange twist that as the original Jon Kent tries to become his own person, his role as a character is threatened. While opinions on aging him up are mixed, separating him from his family to bring back the younger version of himself is truly sad. It’s hard to picture Superman’s reaction when he returns from his travels and finds his son appearing much younger. Regardless, the story of both Jon Kents isn’t finished, and big changes are definitely coming soon.
