Over 50 years ago, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws redefined the “animals attack” genre, captivating viewers with its suspenseful scenes and unforgettable characters. Since then, numerous other shark movies have been made, and while Jaws remains a classic, many have found success by offering unique takes on the formula. Currently, a new shark film on Netflix is proving to be a huge hit for the streaming service.
From April 6th to 12th, the movie Thrash was the most popular film on Netflix worldwide. It was viewed 37.7 million times and watched for a total of 54 million hours. This put it well ahead of the second most popular movie, The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson, which had 7.3 million views and 11.9 million hours watched. This was the first week Thrash appeared in Netflix’s top 10.
Why Thrash Is a Massive Hit for Netflix

Over the past month, anticipation has grown for the upcoming thriller, Thrash. Netflix initially showcased the film in March, emphasizing what sets it apart from typical low-budget movies like the Sharknado series. Thrash offers a more realistic and intense experience, placing the story within the chaos of a powerful Category 5 hurricane. As the town struggles with widespread flooding, residents must also evade a predatory shark. The trailer hinted at plenty of shocking and violent deaths—exactly what fans of monster movies enjoy—suggesting the film won’t hold back on the gore and fully delivers on its R-rating.
Unlike popular shark movies like Jaws or The Shallows, Thrash hasn’t received much praise from critics – it currently has a 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences give it even lower marks at 24%. This likely means it won’t be considered one of the best monster movies. However, fans of B-movies will probably still enjoy it. While the story isn’t particularly original, most viewers agree it’s a decent thriller that delivers exactly what you’d expect. At just 84 minutes long, Thrash is a perfect, quick watch for anyone looking for some silly thrills on a streaming service like Netflix.
The impressive viewership numbers for Thrash are even more notable considering it only launched on Netflix on April 10th – it gained millions of views in just a few days! This shows that despite some mixed reviews, audiences were eager to watch Thrash as soon as it became available. The film’s success on Netflix is the culmination of a long and complicated path to release. Originally intended for a theatrical release by Sony, Thrash ultimately found its audience on Netflix. For everyone involved, it must be rewarding to see the film connect with viewers worldwide.
Although the filmmakers originally hoped Thrash would be shown in cinemas, it likely ended up in a better place on streaming services. Sony initially planned to release it during the summer, even scheduling it for Independence Day weekend. However, releasing it then might have meant it would have gotten lost among all the bigger movies coming out in July. Given the reviews, it’s unlikely many people would have gone to the theater to see it, but it’s much easier to get them to watch it at home. Now, Thrash could potentially launch a new series of B-movies on Netflix.
