It’s surprising to see so many shark movies becoming popular on Netflix! This week, two shark thrillers are actually in the Top 10 most-watched list, with a new film joining “Thrash” (starring Phoebe Dynevor and Djimon Hounsou) to capture viewers’ attention.
Starring Alicia Silverstone and James Tupper, the movie The Requin follows a couple, Jaelyn and Kyle, whose romantic vacation takes a disastrous turn. A tropical storm destroys their villa and leaves them stranded in the ocean, where they must fight for survival against both the harsh elements and circling sharks. Both critics and audiences seem to agree: it’s a truly bad movie.
The Requin is a Rough Take on Survival Horror
Okay, so I just watched The Requin, and honestly, it’s a bit of a mess. It feels like it’s trying to be both a tense survival story and a classic man-versus-shark flick, but doesn’t really commit to either. And at an hour and a half, it feels that long. One critic, Peter Gray, pointed out that the movie tries to focus on the couple’s relationship, which makes the totally over-the-top, almost silly CGI at the end even weirder, especially considering the serious performance Alicia Silverstone gives. Honestly, it’s pretty formulaic – it doesn’t bring anything new to the shark thriller table, and sadly, it falls into the same trap as a lot of others in the genre with those questionable special effects.
The movie The Requin received overwhelmingly negative reviews, scoring a mere 6% on Rotten Tomatoes. Many viewers considered it one of the worst films ever made, dismissing it as a melodramatic and poorly executed shark thriller. One viewer bluntly stated it had unbearable characters, terrible acting, a nonsensical plot, and disappointing special effects, struggling to adequately describe just how bad it was.
