Inspired by actual events from the 1880s in Southeast Arizona, like the famous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and the Earp Vendetta Ride, the film Tombstone is a significant movie in the history of Westerns. Along with films like Dances With Wolves and Unforgiven, it helped revive the Western genre in the 1990s after a period of decline.
Featuring a strong cast including Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, Charlton Heston, and Robert Mitchum, Tombstone was both a box office hit and a critical success. It’s known for its exciting action, great direction, quotable lines, and the compelling performances of Russell and Kilmer.
If you loved Tombstone, here are eight more movies you might enjoy. They all have something similar – whether it’s exciting gunfights, compelling stories set in the Old West, or memorable characters. We highly recommend giving these Western classics a watch.
‘Young Guns’ (1988)

With a cast of popular 1980s actors like Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Charlie Sheen, Young Guns is a Western that appeals to more than just genre fans. It’s both a classic cowboy story and a lively coming-of-age tale, packed with energy and a quick pace. The film loosely recreates the story of Billy the Kid and his group, the Regulators, during a historical conflict known as the Lincoln County War.
If you loved the fast-paced gunfights and strong bonds of friendship in Tombstone, you’ll probably also like Young Guns. It prioritizes exciting action and lively teamwork, rather than the slower, more suspenseful style of some other Westerns.
‘3:10 to Yuma’ (2007)

It’s been a while since a Western truly stood out as a classic, but the 2007 film 3:10 to Yuma definitely fits the bill. Based on a 1953 short story by Elmore Leonard and a 1957 film of the same name, it centers on a struggling rancher, portrayed by Christian Bale, who accepts the dangerous—but well-paying—task of transporting a famous outlaw, played by Russell Crowe.
This gripping and intense Western earned a fantastic 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many viewers thought it was even better than the first film, thanks to powerful performances from Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, and James Mangold’s skillful direction. Like the classic film Tombstone, it successfully combines exciting action with a meaningful story, making it a must-watch for Western enthusiasts and fans of great movies alike.
‘Appaloosa’ (2008)

Ed Harris directs and stars in this film alongside Viggo Mortensen. They play a pair of tough lawmen sent to restore order to the chaotic town of Appaloosa, which is being controlled by a ruthless rancher and his gang. Their mission gets more difficult when a charming but scheming widow, played by Renée Zellweger, arrives and puts a strain on their partnership.
I absolutely loved this movie! It felt like a classic Western, but with real heart. It’s a story about people, and while it doesn’t shy away from tough stuff, it never gets overwhelmingly dark. It has that wonderful, old-fashioned charm that makes it enjoyable for everyone.
‘True Grit’ (2010)

The Coen brothers’ adaptation of Charles Portis’s 1968 novel, True Grit, was the biggest commercial success on this list. The film centers on Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old girl brilliantly portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld, who enlists the help of Rooster Cogburn, a gruff U.S. Marshal with only one eye, to find the man who murdered her father. Along with Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, they embark on a perilous quest through a rugged landscape, facing dangers from outlaws, the unforgiving terrain, and their own internal struggles.
The movie True Grit was a huge success with both audiences and critics, earning widespread praise and a remarkable ten Academy Award nominations. Despite all the recognition, it didn’t actually win any Oscars. However, if you’re looking for a Western that’s emotionally powerful, suspenseful, and visually striking—with moments of dark humor—True Grit is considered one of the best in the genre, both recently and throughout film history.
‘The Quick and the Dead’ (1995)
Sam Raimi, famous for films like Darkman and Evil Dead, surprised audiences with The Quick and the Dead, a Western that often flies under the radar. Though it didn’t reach the same cult following as his earlier work, the film still showcases Raimi’s signature playful style while offering a new and interesting direction that fans will likely appreciate.
The story centers on a skilled and mysterious female gunslinger seeking revenge. She enters a yearly quick-draw competition run by the man she’s after – a cold-blooded gunslinger portrayed by the renowned Gene Hackman. The film also features strong performances from Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Sharon Stone, all coming off successful roles – Crowe from Romper Stomper, DiCaprio from What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and The Basketball Diaries, and Stone from Basic Instinct.
The Quick and the Dead is a fast-paced, visually striking Western that pays tribute to classic films of the genre. However, it’s updated with director Sam Raimi’s signature style to appeal to today’s viewers.
‘Open Range’ (2003)

Kevin Costner directs and stars in Open Range, a compelling Western about a conflict between cattlemen. The story centers on a free-range herder, played by Robert Duvall, who moves into Montana territory controlled by a cruel cattle baron, portrayed by Michael Gambon, leading to a violent showdown.
Tombstone and Open Range tell stories in different ways – Tombstone is dramatic and features exaggerated characters, while Open Range builds tension slowly with a strong atmosphere. However, both films are united by a love for incredibly realistic and powerful gunfights, and each includes some of the most exciting and impactful shootouts in movie history.
‘Wyatt Earp’ (1994)

Coming out only six months after Tombstone, the movie Wyatt Earp naturally drew comparisons, as it also tells the story of Wyatt Earp and the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Although it didn’t achieve the same level of commercial or critical success as Tombstone, it still offers plenty to enjoy for fans of Westerns.
This film is a grand undertaking, and Kevin Costner, fresh off his hit Dances With Wolves, gives a powerful performance as Wyatt Earp. The cast is incredibly impressive, featuring stars like Gene Hackman, Mark Harmon, Michael Madsen, Catherine O’Hara, Bill Pullman, Dennis Quaid, Isabella Rossellini, and Tom Sizemore. While its nearly three-and-a-half-hour length is a common complaint, it’s the most detailed and thoughtful portrayal of Wyatt Earp’s life ever made, making it a good choice for those truly fascinated by the legendary figure.
Unforgiven (1992)
Clint Eastwood, famous for classic Westerns like Hang ’em High and the Dollars Trilogy, both stars in and directs Unforgiven, a film many consider a masterpiece. He plays a hardened former outlaw who comes out of retirement to hunt down two cowboys who brutally attacked a woman. During his pursuit, he faces conflict with the town sheriff and a rival bounty hunter, a colorful Englishman, as they both compete for the reward money.
Unforgiven is widely considered a masterpiece, celebrated for its captivating story, stunning visuals, and strong direction. The film features excellent performances from Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, and Richard Harris. Critics loved it – it currently holds a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – and it received 9 Academy Award nominations, winning 4, including Best Picture and Best Director.
