Fans of Weekly Shonen Jump got a big surprise with the return of Atsushi Nakamura, who is starting his third series with the magazine. April is shaping up to be an exciting month, with three new series launching each week! First up, on April 5th, Atsushi Nakamura’s Roku’s House of Oddities will begin. Then, on April 12th, Satosho Masayoshi will release Drawn to the Fire. And finally, on April 19th, Hideaki Sorachi – the famous creator of the beloved series Gintama – is making his comeback with Class 2-B Hero Destroyerz, a fantasy comedy about what happens after the heroes defeat the demon king and kick him out of his castle.
Roku’s House of Oddities is a funny and spooky story centered around a boy who’s been cursed multiple times. Mangaka Nakamura has been creating comics for over ten years, working on various series and short stories, but hasn’t achieved widespread recognition – until now. He hopes his newest series will connect with readers and share an important message.
Roku’s House of Oddities’ Creator Shares a Message For Readers

With each new chapter of the WSJ manga, the author includes a message for fans, which Viz Media shares on their website in the “Mangaka Musings” section. When the manga first launched, Nakamura wrote that although this is his third time creating a serialized manga, he’s approaching it with the energy of a beginner and wants to make the characters as engaging as possible.
Nakamura’s initial manga series, Kurokuroku, appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2013, but it was canceled after a short run due to low readership. He later created Agravity Boys in 2019, which lasted longer, though it still ended after 59 chapters. Despite being published in Japan’s most popular manga magazine, both of these series didn’t gain much attention. However, his newest work is showing a lot of potential and could be his big break.
What Is Roku’s House of Oddities About?

The story follows Seiroku Akari, a freshman in high school and a member of the science club. He’s fascinated by science and doesn’t believe in superstitions, so he tries to prove urban legends aren’t true. He discovers ‘The Moonlit Tales of Kokubunji,’ a legend based on five stories of powerful curses. According to the legend, performing five specific rituals over five days will break the seals containing these spirits and unleash them.
He tried to disprove the legend behind the ritual, but it backfired, and he found himself cursed by the very stories he doubted. Now, a funny series of events unfolds as the spirits, with nowhere else to haunt, are forced to live with him. The manga currently has three chapters available to read on the official Manga Plus app.
