The story of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord has expanded significantly with the conclusion of Season 1, Episode 6, “Night of the Hunted.” Episodes five and six already increased the stakes with the arrival of the Empire on Janix, including not only officers and Stormtroopers, but also an Inquisitor – specifically, the First Brother, also known as Marrok, who first appeared in Ahsoka Season 1. Marrok is hunting down Maul, along with two Jedi who survived Order 66, and their paths are now connected. (Please be aware that this article contains spoilers for Episodes 5 & 6 of Maul – Shadow Lord.)
As a huge cinema fan, I was really gripped by these episodes! We see Marrok initially battling Devon Izara and her Jedi Master, Eeko-Dio Daki, and then things get intense when he finally comes face-to-face with Maul. It’s wild because Maul and Devon actually team up for a bit to fight Marrok! After they manage to hold him off, Marrok returns to his ship and kneels before a holographic figure. He reports: “My Lord, I’ve confirmed Maul is here. He’s even more dangerous than we thought, and he’s working with two Jedi. What are your orders?”
Was Marrok Talking To Darth Vader In Maul – Shadow Lord Episode 6’s Ending?
Marrok might have been speaking to the Grand Inquisitor, given his high rank and authority over the Inquisitorius. It would make sense for the First Brother to seek further instructions from him. However, the secrecy surrounding the conversation, and Marrok addressing the person as “My Lord,” strongly suggests he was actually talking to Darth Vader. There’s little reason to conceal the identity of the Grand Inquisitor, while the title “Lord” aligns perfectly with Vader, especially considering how often we’ve heard references like “Lord Vader.”
If Darth Vader is involved, it could significantly change the direction of Maul’s story. The next logical move appears to be sending in backup. We already know the series will feature Marrok and the Eleventh Brother, an Inquisitor previously seen in Tales of the Jedi who was defeated by Ahsoka Tano. It’s likely the Eleventh Brother will be dispatched to even the odds in the conflict between Maul and the Jedi.
Is Star Wars Finally Going To Do Darth Vader Vs. Maul?

It’s unlikely two Inquisitors will be enough to deal with Maul. Since the Empire doesn’t ultimately defeat him, and a second season of Maul – Shadow Lord is planned, there’s clearly more to the story – though Eeko-Dio’s character might not survive the first season. If the Inquisitors fail, will Darth Vader get involved? The most popular idea about Shadow Lord is that it’s building towards a fight between Maul and Vader, and that now seems very likely.
For decades, fans have wanted to see Darth Maul and Darth Vader face off, and it’s a match-up that’s been a long time coming. Despite being major characters in Star Wars, they’ve rarely shared screen time. In The Phantom Menace, Maul briefly passes by a young Anakin Skywalker, but doesn’t notice him. Later, during The Clone Wars, Maul learns about Anakin’s descent to the dark side, but they never meet. Even when both are present on Malachor in the Star Wars Rebels finale, they don’t interact.
Vader and Maul fought in a non-canon Star Wars comic back in 2001, with Vader winning. However, because both are incredibly popular and strong characters – and considering Vader eventually became Darth Sidious’ apprentice, a position Maul previously held – a fight between them has always been highly anticipated. Some fans speculate it might happen in the Season 1 finale of Shadow Lord, but it seems more likely the creators will save it for Season 2 as a way to build excitement.
Darth Vader is simply too powerful for Maul to defeat in a direct fight. While Maul is a highly skilled warrior, Vader is one of the most powerful Force users in history. Maul would have to rely on his cunning and escape. He might even appear to be defeated, allowing him to disappear and continue plotting against the Empire from the shadows. Whatever happens, their confrontation promises to be an exciting showdown.
New episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord release on Mondays on Disney+.
