Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) has gone into labour in Emmerdale – and it couldn’t have gone worse.
Her pregnancy hasn’t gone as planned. She originally intended to carry a child for her granddaughter Sarah and her husband Jacob, acting as a surrogate. However, after a short relationship with Ross Barton, she unexpectedly became pregnant with his baby instead.
She’s determined to keep the truth hidden. Her husband, Mack (Lawrence Robb), is aware the baby might not be Sarah and Jacob’s, but he thinks he could be the father.
Charity and Mack were organizing a baby shower today, and realized they still needed to pick up the cake. While driving to the bakery on country roads, their car unfortunately broke down.
They were stuck without a phone, and to make things even worse, Charity went into labor.

Ross happened to be driving down the same road and offered Charity and the others a ride to the hospital, but Charity strongly objected. Things quickly went from bad to worse when they arrived and got stuck in an elevator in the maternity ward.
Ross and Mack were going to have to deliver the baby.
“They’re both trying to, initially, keep Charity calm,” Atkins continued.
Ross is attempting to use the intercom to call for assistance. Meanwhile, Mack unexpectedly enters the elevator, which causes him to relive the trauma of being trapped in the bunker. The audience then hears him panicking. It’s ironic because, first, she’s just gone into labor, and second, Mack has a severe fear of enclosed spaces.

“He just recoils into the corner and is like this frightened animal.”
Later this week, Charity’s situation takes a terrifying turn when she suddenly begins to bleed heavily. On top of keeping the secret about the baby, she’s now in a life-or-death crisis!
“There’s every possibility that it’s just not looking good,” Atkins explained.
Her chances of having a safe delivery are very low, given the difficult circumstances. Several complications have arisen, making the situation extremely precarious, and everyone involved is understandably anxious and upset.
It honestly felt like I’d walked straight onto the set of a medical drama like Casualty! Doctors were rushing everywhere, and I kept hearing all sorts of complicated medical terms – it was a bit overwhelming, to be honest.

Atkins discussed how Charity would react if her secret came out, and the potential consequences. He explained that while she’s briefly disoriented, she realizes the constant threat of discovery. He described her future as being incredibly fragile and stressful, like ‘living on broken glass’.
She explained that she always felt like one wrong comment – often from Ross – could cause trouble, so she constantly had to manage her relationships with people. It was a constant effort to avoid conflict and protect herself, something she was very familiar with.

She’s always found herself in difficult situations and faced many hardships. But she’s strong – a true fighter.
However, I believe she also realizes how serious it would be if that truth were revealed, and the damage it would cause to the Dingle family. It would completely destroy the trust between them, likely forever.
I met with producer Sophie Roper yesterday to discuss upcoming storylines, and I’m really looking forward to a challenging but exciting year. I think it’s going to be one of my best storylines yet.
