The critically acclaimed and successful sci-fi film directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Tom Hardy will soon be removed from HBO Max. Many consider it one of the most original and captivating sci-fi movies of recent years.
Inception is leaving HBO Max this month
HBO Max will bid farewell to Inception on Friday, May 1, 2026.
The movie follows Cobb, an expert thief who steals secrets not by breaking into places, but by entering people’s dreams. He’s offered a chance to clear his past and reunite with his children if he completes a dangerous task for a wealthy businessman named Saito. Cobb must plant an idea in the mind of Saito’s competitor, Robert Fischer, convincing him to break up his father’s company. Eager to return home, Cobb takes the job and assembles a skilled team to help him pull it off.
Christopher Nolan was the writer and director of the film. He first came up with the idea in the early 2000s, developing an 80-page outline about people who steal dreams. He presented this concept to Warner Bros. in 2001, but decided he needed more experience before tackling such a large-scale project and put it aside. After the success of The Dark Knight, Nolan revisited the Inception script, which he had been working on intermittently for a decade, and chose it as his next film.
The movie stars Tom Hardy as Eames, Leonardo DiCaprio as Cobb, Ken Watanabe as Saito, Cillian Murphy as Robert, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Arthur, Michael Caine as Stephen, Marion Cotillard as Mal, and Dileep Rao as Yusuf, along with other talented actors.
Since its release on July 16, 2010, Inception has been widely praised by both audiences and critics. It currently boasts a 91% audience score and an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film originally earned $828.2 million worldwide in theaters and, with several re-releases, has now grossed a total of $839.7 million. Inception also received four Academy Awards in 2011.
