The final episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord (episodes 5 and 6) hint at a darker future for the story and its characters, largely due to a significant cameo from the wider Star Wars universe. While the series included several subtle references, the biggest surprise came at the very end. Following events in episodes 3 and 4, the Empire firmly established its control over the planet Janix in episodes 5 and 6.
As a big Star Wars fan, I was really intrigued by the introduction of Marrok in Ahsoka. He shows up as this kind of spectral figure, and it quickly becomes clear he’s one of the Empire’s Inquisitors – those Force-sensitive hunters tasked with wiping out any remaining Jedi or anyone else Palpatine saw as a threat. Interestingly, in the Maul – Shadow Lord comic, Marrok actually tracks down both Jedi and other Force users through characters like Devon, Daki, and even Maul himself. It adds a cool layer to his backstory!
Warning! The following sections contain spoilers for Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 5 and 6.
Following an extended lightsaber battle, a failed escape attempt, and a surprising Star Wars appearance, episodes 5 and 6 of Maul – Shadow Lord concluded. This sets the stage for a grim final four episodes, with difficult consequences for key characters, their stories, and the planet Janix itself.
Emperor Palpatine’s Dark Shadow Looms Over Maul
At the end of Maul – Shadow Lord episode 6, Marrok runs away from a fight with Maul. He then speaks with Emperor Palpatine. Although we don’t see or hear Palpatine, the outline of his signature hooded cloak is visible on screen.
While Darth Vader is often seen as the head of the Inquisitorius in Star Wars, the story hints that Palpatine is actually directing Marrok. This makes sense because Palpatine is wary of Maul and has consistently tried to eliminate him as a potential threat to his ambition of controlling the galaxy.
Maul’s desire for revenge is driven by Palpatine, not Darth Vader. There isn’t a strong reason for Vader and Maul to be enemies, other than Maul’s dislike of the Empire. To Maul, Vader would likely just be another Imperial enforcer. This suggests Palpatine is probably the one manipulating Marrok to eliminate Maul.
This development could lead to a rematch between Maul and Palpatine, recalling their battle in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Alternatively, Palpatine might even send Darth Vader after Maul. Regardless, the ending of Maul – Shadow Lord episode 6 strongly suggests a powerful, sinister force from the Star Wars universe is about to enter the conflict.
Maul vs. Marrok Established The Empire’s Threat… & Devon’s Potential Alliance With The Shadow Lord
The battle before Marrok spoke with Palpatine was just as thrilling as watching Darth Sidious himself. It featured Maul and Devon fighting alongside each other against an Inquisitor on top of a speeding train. This fight clearly demonstrates that the Inquisitors are a serious threat.
Maul is an incredibly skilled lightsaber duelist, and his opponent, Marrok, proved to be a match for both him and Devon. This effectively demonstrates the danger the Empire poses, which fits with the story’s reluctance to involve them directly. Maul specifically didn’t want the Empire to come to Janix, and Marrok showed him exactly why, highlighting the threat they represented to his plans even before Maul gained full power.
However, Marrok’s arrival is actually helping Maul with a key part of his scheme: convincing Devon to join him. For the past five episodes, Maul has been trying to show Devon he’s not the bad guy she believes him to be. Now, after witnessing Marrok nearly defeat Maul, attack her, and almost kill Rylee, Devon is starting to think Maul might have been telling the truth all along.
After turning off her lightsaber, Maul points out to Devon that she’s now recognizing who her real enemy is. This suggests Devon is starting to realize they share a common enemy, considering the Empire’s oppressive rule. While Maul’s approach to fighting the Empire is more aggressive, Devon is clearly becoming less hostile towards him, especially after Marrok appeared.
The Empire’s Darkness Will Only Spread Over Maul – Shadow Lord’s Future
Beyond the possibility of seeing Palpatine or Darth Vader appear, the ending scene with Marrok strongly suggests the story is heading in a much grimmer direction. Marrok revealed to Palpatine that Maul is on Janix and has teamed up with two Jedi. This will likely cause Palpatine to increase his control over Janix to eliminate these new dangers to his rule.
Trailers for Maul – Shadow Lord hinted at how the story will unfold, revealing the involvement of another Inquisitor named the Eleventh Brother, alongside Marrok. This character was first introduced in Tales of the Jedi, and Maul – Shadow Lord suggests we’ll see more of his role as a hunter of Jedi.
The rest of the Maul – Shadow Lord series will likely see the Eleventh Brother and Marrok increasing the pressure on Maul, his team, and those helping him. Things will be even harder for them after Lawson’s attempt to sneak the Jedi off-planet failed. More importantly, the ending of episode 6 suggests the Empire will crack down even harder on the people of Janix as they search for both Maul and the Jedi he’s trying to bring into the fold.
