I’m a huge fan of the Warhammer universe, especially 40K. It’s awesome getting to experience it in ways that don’t break the bank – those miniatures are seriously pricey! I’ve devoured a ton of novels from Black Library, played every game I could find that still works, and even caught that 40K episode of Secret Level that kind of flew under the radar. I definitely don’t know everything about the grimdark future, but I try to keep up with all the complicated backstory as best I can.
I love getting into the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and honestly, I usually do it through the games – even though a lot of them are just okay. I’m a huge fan of Space Marine 2, which is easily one of the best Warhammer games out there, and Dawn of War was a massive part of my childhood. But what really grabs me are the weird, forgotten Warhammer games – the ones that aren’t perfect but still have a dedicated fanbase. I was so excited when one of those recently showed up on Steam, because I have a lot of good memories playing it when I was younger. Thankfully, it seems like the often-criticized Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior has aged well and is totally worth checking out in 2026, if you’re willing to forgive a few rough edges.
Fire Warrior Is A Great Warhammer 40,000 Game Game

Several older Warhammer games, including strategy titles and classic first-person shooters, recently appeared on Steam. They’re available at significantly reduced prices and haven’t been updated, but are now much easier to find and play thanks to Steam’s popularity. One of these is Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior, a first-person shooter from 2003 that I fondly remember playing – though never finishing – on my old PlayStation 2.
Released in the early 2000s, Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior shows its age. It has clunky movement, inconsistent controls, and feels somewhat incomplete. Players might be frustrated by a missing soundtrack, deliberately challenging level design, and a lack of customizable options. While it sounds problematic, Fire Warrior is surprisingly enjoyable – especially for existing Warhammer fans or newcomers eager to get into the series.
Okay, so Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior isn’t going to be anyone’s pick for the best FPS campaign ever – it’s definitely not perfect. But honestly, it just nails the feeling of the Warhammer 40K universe. I haven’t seen many games since that capture the atmosphere and look of 40K quite as well, and it still holds up as a great experience in 2026, and probably for a long time to come. You can really tell the developers, Kuju Entertainment, were big fans of the lore. They created some absolutely stunning environments that are some of the best visual representations of the 40K universe you’ll find in any video game.
Despite its flaws, Fire Warrior is a standout first-person shooter in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Like Star Wars: Republic Commandos, it offers a uniquely immersive experience, though it can be challenging at times. While the shooting isn’t perfectly true to the lore and can be frustrating, Fire Warrior is a truly excellent 40K game, and one of the most underrated FPS titles ever made. It’s a special game that we likely won’t see again.
We Need More Games Like Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior

With the recent resurgence of Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior, I’ve been thinking about the quality of Warhammer video games overall. Both the Warhammer and 40K universes have seen a mix of good and bad games, with 40K titles being more consistently popular. Even the less successful Warhammer games often offer something unique for dedicated fans. Fire Warrior, for instance, might not grab everyone, but 40K fans like me are willing to overlook its flaws to appreciate what it does well. This suggests a possible issue with funding – perhaps these games are held back by limited budgets, stemming from a belief that there isn’t enough demand for them.
Warhammer video games generally succeed when backed by a major or respected game studio. The Total War: Warhammer series is a particularly popular part of the overall strategy game franchise, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has been so well-received that it’s getting an extra year of updates and a sequel. Rogue Trader by Owlcat Games is frequently praised as both an excellent CRPG and one of the best Warhammer games ever created, and Fatshark has found success with their Left 4 Deadstyle gameplay within the Warhammer* universe.
Recent games show there’s a strong demand for quality Warhammer video games. Now might be the perfect time to create a single-player first-person shooter set in the Warhammer 40K universe, similar to the game Fire Warrior. At the very least, we need more Warhammer games that feature less popular factions, like the Tau. They rarely get attention in novels or dedicated games. Fire Warrior did a great job highlighting the Tau, and we need more games to do the same – explore the often-overlooked corners of the Warhammer 40K universe.
There’s no reason these two concepts can’t be separate. I’d love to see a role-playing game in the style of Rogue Trader focusing on a Tau Fire Warrior, and also a first-person shooter campaign about the Cadians defending their planet from Abaddon the Despoiler. Maybe we’ll finally get a Fire Warriorlike shooter soon, or maybe not. Either way, it’s great to have the original Fire Warrior available on Steam, letting me relive the nostalgia and explore its beautifully designed Warhammer 40,000* environments – which, in my opinion, still make it a game worth playing today.
Hey, I’m curious – does anyone still play Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior? I was thinking about revisiting it and wanted to know if it’s still worth the time. Let me know what you think in the ComicBook Forum – I’d love to hear your opinions!
