PS5 Players Flock to Free Game for Ridiculously Easy Platinum Trophy

The value of earning trophies in games has diminished over time, so it’s not surprising that many PS5 players are downloading the free game, Chess Mate.

Getting the Platinum achievement is surprisingly easy, like a piece of cake! Even if you’re already familiar with chess, it should only take about five minutes. If you’re new to the game, it won’t take much longer.

To win the special prize, you need to collect one of each chess piece, achieve a checkmate, and restart the game at least five times. You can make it easier by playing on the simplest difficulty setting and using the shuffle mode to improve your chances.

There’s a guide walking you through the steps here:

Sony has recently been removing low-quality games from the PlayStation Store, but it’s unclear if they will also remove ‘Chess Mate’ under these new rules.

This chess game is truly free to play. You can enjoy the full experience without spending any money, although optional in-game purchases are available.

Free Platinums Are Growing in Popularity

Chess Mate might have avoided punishment, but it seems giving away free in-game currency, or ‘Platinums,’ is becoming a popular tactic for developers looking to quickly gain attention.

Recently released, Ecchi Secrets is a version of the Qix game featuring suggestive imagery. It’s upfront about using AI-generated anime art and relies heavily on optional in-app purchases, but you can still unlock all achievements without spending any money.

It’s interesting to note that spicy, fast-paced puzzle games like this have been around on consoles for a long time. Some of you might remember the Gals Panic series on the SEGA Saturn, which had a similar idea – but with beautifully drawn anime pixel art instead of the AI-generated visuals we see here.

In 1996, Namco released Dancing Eyes, a game that brought the idea into a 3D world. It involved virtually removing clothes from animated, 3D characters.

The idea of bringing that series back for the PS Move was canceled in 2012. However, with similar content like Ecchi Secrets still available on the PlayStation Store, the publisher might have simply been ahead of its time with the reboot plans.
