Since launching in 2020, Peacock has become a go-to destination for animation fans. The streaming service draws from the extensive collections of Universal, DreamWorks, and Illumination, offering a huge library of both new and classic animated content – including recent successes like The Wild Robot and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, as well as favorites like the Shrek series. This April, Peacock added another major highlight: one of the most acclaimed animated trilogies of the 21st century.
The original Kung Fu Panda trilogy remains one of the best animated series of the 21st century. Released between 2008 and 2016, these three DreamWorks Animation films were critically acclaimed, hugely successful at the box office, and won many awards. The movies follow Po, a lovable but clumsy panda voiced by Jack Black, as he learns kung fu and accepts his fate as the Dragon Warrior. Through his journey, he battles evil, comes to terms with his past, and strives for inner peace to safeguard the Valley of Peace. The first three films, which paved the way for the 2024 release of Kung Fu Panda 4, became available to stream on Peacock starting April 1st.
The Kung Fu Panda Franchise Is One of DreamWorks’ Strongest
DreamWorks Animation is known for its successful franchises, and Kung Fu Panda stands out as one of its most consistently popular and well-received. The series has earned over $2.3 billion worldwide, with each of the four movies maintaining high standards for both animation and storytelling. Critics consistently give the films high ratings – the latest, Kung Fu Panda 4, has a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the original three movies all scored above 80%. What makes Kung Fu Panda so enjoyable is its ability to evolve its story and characters while still focusing on Po’s personal journey and the important themes of growth and embracing change, making it a consistently rewarding experience for viewers.
After almost twenty years, the Kung Fu Panda series is still going strong and looks set to return with its winning combination of comedy and emotion. Following the positive reception of Kung Fu Panda 4, director Mike Mitchell hinted at a fifth movie, and even the possibility of further sequels. In an interview with ComicBook, Mitchell suggested that the character of Po has a lot of potential and “could last forever,” with future films promising even more spectacular action and a larger scope.
Other Kid-Friendly Movies Now on Peacock
As a movie buff, I’ve been checking out what’s new on Peacock, and April looks great for families! They’ve added a bunch of titles for everyone, not just adults. Beyond the Kung Fu Panda films, they’ve got fun movies like Captain Underpants, Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat, The Prince of Egypt, and even Space Jam. That adds to their already solid collection of family favorites, including all the Despicable Me movies and several The Croods films – definitely something to keep the whole family entertained!
