Darth Maul has become a truly iconic Star Wars villain, and his popularity shows the audience’s desire for stories focused on the bad guys. While fans want to see these stories, Lucasfilm has often been hesitant, likely because Star Wars is fundamentally a story about good triumphing over evil. Plus, the major villains like Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine have already been explored extensively.
Darth Maul is a unique case. Though he died in The Phantom Menace, George Lucas quickly found ways to bring the character back – at one point, even considering a storyline where General Grievous was a resurrected Maul in Revenge of the Sith. Ultimately, Maul reappeared in The Clone Wars as a powerful crime lord determined to challenge Palpatine. His story continues in the new villain-focused Star Wars TV show, Maul – Shadow Hunter, solidifying his place as one of the franchise’s greatest villains.
Maul is a Little Fish in a Big Pond
Darth Maul often acts like one of the most powerful dark side users, but his accomplishments don’t really match his self-image. He was defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi, who was still just a Padawan learner, in The Phantom Menace, and later by Ahsoka Tano during Season 7 of The Clone Wars. More recently, in Shadow Lord, Maul even had trouble fighting just two of Darth Vader’s Inquisitors – while Vader himself likely could have handled them all easily.
What truly makes Darth Maul interesting is that he’s a relatively minor villain competing with some incredibly powerful Sith Lords. He’s often overshadowed, like a small fish in a big pond – Qui-Gon Jinn was right to point out there’s always someone more powerful. This dynamic actually makes Maul a surprisingly compelling character, as he’s essentially an underdog facing a much larger, more imposing enemy.
Darth Maul Is As Much a Victim as a Villain

The series Shadow Lord adds depth to Darth Maul’s character, making him surprisingly relatable. The eighth episode includes impressive flashbacks detailing Maul’s upbringing and training under Darth Sidious. These scenes reveal that Maul was as much a victim of circumstance as a villain, taken as a young child by Palpatine and molded to serve Sidious’s purposes. Sadly, it becomes clear that Palpatine never considered Maul a true apprentice, and was simultaneously grooming Count Dooku to join the dark side. Maul was simply a means to an end, destined to be cast aside when no longer useful.
The story subtly reveals that Maul’s actions during a dark period are driven by a desire to prevent others from suffering as he did. He’s tormented by memories and essentially promises his younger self he won’t allow Palpatine to inflict similar pain on anyone else. While this vow has a strangely honorable quality, it’s ironic and disturbing because Maul is currently trying to do the very same thing to Devon Izara. He despises Palpatine and wants to dismantle everything Palpatine represents, but his hatred is ironically turning him into someone very much like his former master. It’s a beautifully poetic concept.
We Already Know How Maul’s Story Will End

As a huge Star Wars fan, I think it actually helps knowing how Darth Maul’s story ends. Back in Star Wars Rebels, we already saw his final showdown with Obi-Wan. That episode, “Twin Suns,” is widely considered one of the best in the entire series – it’s incredibly moving. It really showed Maul’s biggest flaw: he’s haunted by his past. He just kept repeating the same mistakes, desperately hoping things would turn out differently, but he was stuck in a cycle he couldn’t break.
The idea of fate has always been central to Star Wars, and it makes the story of Maul – Shadow Lord particularly tragic. We see Maul desperately trying to escape what seems predetermined for him, yearning for control over his own life, but ultimately, his fate is sealed. While we don’t know exactly what will happen to Devon Izara or whether Maul will leave a lasting impact, we know his efforts will ultimately be in vain. The story reveals that Maul will die on Tatooine, forgotten and buried far from home.
We’re guaranteed at least two seasons of Maul – Shadow Lord. Even though Maul’s search for revenge seems impossible, he won’t give up, and his story will continue as the evil Empire spreads across the galaxy. Maul is a dark figure, and his ongoing fight against the forces he embraces promises to be fascinating.
