5 Best Turn-Based SRPGs Like Fire Emblem

The Fire Emblem series is widely considered one of the best strategy RPGs around. Over the years, it’s constantly improved and innovated, with Three Houses becoming its biggest hit. What makes Fire Emblem special is how invested you become in its characters, how engaging the turn-based battles are, and how satisfying the overall stories are. But, since there aren’t a huge number of Fire Emblem games, dedicated fans will eventually find themselves looking for similar games to play once they’ve completed them all.

Luckily, several strategy RPGs, similar to Fire Emblem, offer a comparable experience. Until the next main Fire Emblem game is released, these fantastic indie and AA titles will keep fans satisfied. They range from games that closely resemble specific Fire Emblem eras to those that creatively reimagine the classic formula, making them perfect for anyone looking for a strategy RPG like Nintendo’s beloved series.

5. Magellania

I absolutely love the indie game Magellania, especially its incredibly unique art style. Everything from the beautiful level design to the artwork for each character is amazing, making it a truly visually stunning game that consistently surprises and inspires me. I haven’t played anything that looks quite like it, and that’s largely thanks to Illunsoft, the incredibly talented one-person developer who also composed the fantastic soundtrack.

Let’s talk about the gameplay in Magellania. It’s a strategy RPG, and it delivers a lot of what makes games like Fire Emblem so enjoyable. While the combat system isn’t exactly the same, it still focuses on smart strategy, managing your units, and improving them over time. You’ll fight across big maps against tougher and tougher enemies, commanding an army of soldiers you can customize and upgrade. The game features a unique timing-based parry system to reduce damage, lets you try out different character classes, and offers badges that can significantly change how you play. With tons of battles, a charming story, and a cast of memorable characters, Magellania is a fantastic value and well worth playing if you’re a fan of Fire Emblem or looking for a similar experience.

4. The Banner Saga

When I suggest The Banner Saga Trilogy to people, I usually tell them it’s the closest a game has ever come to capturing the epic scope and emotional impact of The Lord of the Rings. The characters feel as important and memorable as the Fellowship, the world is just as richly detailed and immersive as Middle-earth, and the story – with its vast landscapes, large-scale battles, and quiet, thoughtful moments – is equally captivating. The Banner Saga truly delivers the classic fantasy adventure experience in video game form.

Beyond its captivating fantasy story, The Banner Saga offers engaging turn-based combat similar to Fire Emblem. Though not as complex or expansive, battles in Banner Saga still demand careful strategy, because losing units can have serious consequences. Where you position your troops and how they match up against enemies are crucial – just like in Fire Emblem. It doesn’t perfectly replicate the Fire Emblem experience, but it’s similar enough to draw fans in with its incredible story.

3. Banner of the Maid

Trying to explain Banner of the Maid is tough because it’s so unusual. The game is set during the French Revolution, and you play as Pauline Bonaparte, a made-up sister of Napoleon. You might expect it to be a typical strategy game for Total War fans, but that’s not quite right. The big surprise is that all the characters are designed in an anime style, with exaggerated features. You’ll be leading armies of soldiers – infantry, artillery, and cavalry – all commanded by impressively built men and curvaceous women wearing 18th-century French uniforms. It’s definitely a strange combination!

I really can’t emphasize enough how much I enjoyed Banner of the Maid. It perfectly hits a lot of my interests – I’m a big fan of both 18th and 19th century France and strategy RPGs. Even though the game’s premise is a bit silly, the battles are surprisingly challenging, and the story is truly captivating when well-translated. I genuinely had fun leveling up my units and even took on extra, optional battles. Banner of the Maid is a unique game, but it all works together beautifully and keeps you hooked.

2. Dark Deity

Dark Deity successfully updates the classic Fire Emblem formula for today’s gamers. It captures everything fans love about the older games, offering a fresh story and some unique gameplay additions. While it doesn’t try to be overly flashy, that’s actually a strength – it’s a sincere effort to recreate the magic of those classic titles, something Nintendo hasn’t done with recent Fire Emblem games. If you’re looking for a game similar to Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, Dark Deity is a great choice.

You don’t have to play the Dark Deity games in order. Dark Deity 2 is made to be easy for new players, and while it includes references to the first game and some returning characters, you won’t be lost if you haven’t played the original. If you’re interested in the first game, it’s a good place to start, as Dark Deity 2 improves on some of its issues, making the first game feel a bit clunky afterward. Ultimately, if you enjoy classic Fire Emblem games, you’ll likely enjoy the Dark Deity series.

1. Lost Eidolons

Similar to Dark Deity, Lost Eidolons closely captures the feel of a classic Fire Emblem game. However, instead of a bright anime style, Ocean Drive Studio has opted for a more realistic look. Despite being made by a small team with a limited budget, Lost Eidolons is a visually impressive game, offering next-generation graphics. These visuals make battles more engaging and enhance the storytelling through cinematic cutscenes.

Lost Eidolons clearly draws inspiration from games like The Witcher 3 and Fire Emblem, blending fantasy elements with Fire Emblem’s strategic combat and the immersive storytelling of The Witcher 3. Though it has some imperfections, it often feels more polished than recent Fire Emblem titles. If you’re looking for a Fire Emblem-style game with high-quality graphics and a strong focus on a cinematic narrative, Lost Eidolons is a great choice.

I’m really into SRPGs and looking for some new games to play! If you have any recommendations, please share them in the ComicBook Forum – I’d love to hear what you’re all playing and chat about it!
