Why Voyager’s Kathryn Janeway Is the Most Important Starfleet Captain
In 1995, an actor joined the cast of Star Trek: Voyager, a groundbreaking series featuring the first female captain in the franchise. The show’s premise involved the USS Voyager becoming lost 75,000 light-years from Earth in a distant region of space called the Delta Quadrant. For seven seasons, the crew worked to return home, ultimately finding a way to shorten their journey in the final episode – a move that also severely weakened their enemies, the Borg. Hologram Janeway Isn‘t an Exact Copy of the Human Being She’s Modeled After
Holographic crew members represent a significant advancement in 24th-century holodeck technology. They’re essentially sophisticated artificial intelligence with the unique ability to learn and develop over time. The Doctor from the USS Voyager is one example, as is another holographic character who both achieved self-awareness.
The holographic Janeway shared the same intelligence and charm as the original, but it was obvious she wasn’t a real person – just a program. Early in the show, she mistakenly believes Dal and the other children are Starfleet trainees, simply unable to think of any other explanation for their presence on the ship.

Similar to her original self, the holographic Janeway acts as a motherly figure, both guiding and safeguarding the crew. Whether truly aware or not, she experiences guilt and sadness when she discovers her systems have been tampered with. Ultimately, it’s the real Kathryn Janeway – now a Vice Admiral – who helps her recover, in a situation reminiscent of the movie Freaky Friday, involving a temporary switch of bodies.
The crew of the Protostar faced an impossible decision: destroy their ship or risk Starfleet’s destruction. Influenced by the ship’s holographic Janeway, they prepared to sacrifice themselves, but she intervened, choosing to be destroyed instead so they could live. While not a perfect replica, the hologram possessed everything that made Janeway, Janeway.
Kathryn Janeway Was Perfect for Star Trek: Prodigy, But Hologram Janeway Is a Different Character
The holographic Janeway was an ideal character to bring the world of Star Trek to both the show’s existing fans and a new generation of viewers. As the series progresses – and potentially reaches a third season with Netflix’s support – she continues to have a greater impact as a cherished memory. Ultimately, nothing can truly replace someone you’ve lost, even if that person is a remarkably realistic creation of light and technology.
People may argue about whether she was truly alive, but to the crew of the Protostar, she was. They felt her loss deeply, just as if she had been a real person. Even when a new version of her appeared in Season 2, without the memories of the original, she consistently made the same decisions.
Admiral Janeway adds a welcome, mature presence to the story. Her journey became central to the narrative, with significant consequences for the established lore. The holographic version inspired the children to dream of joining Starfleet, while the real Janeway helped them thrive once they did.
Just like a cherished person who’s gone, the essence of Hologram Janeway continues to exist in the lessons she imparted to those she mentored. However, unlike actual people, she was able to return, joining the young officers as they embark on a new, daring adventure.
The future of Star Trek is currently uncertain. Recently, the franchise has focused heavily on revisiting older characters and stories, like with Picard and the Strange New Worlds prequel. However, the characters in Prodigy felt like a fresh start and a promising direction for the future of Starfleet, both within the show’s story and for the franchise as a whole.
The holographic Janeway was a brilliant way to bring back a beloved character without being limited by established storylines or past events. She felt like the Janeway fans remembered and loved, but she was also a fresh character, distinct from the original Janeway we knew from both Voyager and Prodigy.
Recently, the show has gained more popularity, increasing the likelihood of it returning. It’s currently not available on Paramount+ because of a streaming agreement with Netflix. This is a common situation – for example, shows like Daredevil and other Marvel series had to wait before appearing on Disney+.
Similar to how Disney is handling Daredevil: Born Again, Paramount could reboot Prodigy as a fresh series for a new generation of viewers. This would build on the show’s existing foundation and feature characters like Hologram Janeway, who connect the rich history of Star Trek with its exciting future and ongoing adventures.
