6 Best PS1 Fighting Games That Still Hold Up Today

The first PlayStation was a fantastic console for fighting game enthusiasts. While arcades were booming, the PlayStation often received excellent home versions of those popular arcade games. However, some of those older fighters haven’t aged particularly well. Thankfully, many PlayStation fighting games are still enjoyable today. They might not look as refined as current games, but they offer a great glimpse into what made ’90s fighting games so special and are worth checking out if you’re interested in that era.

Here are six PlayStation 1 fighters that still hold up.

6) Soul Edge/Soul Blade

The original game that started the popular Soulcalibur series was actually released under a different title, so it’s understandable if you didn’t realize it was part of the SC franchise. However, Soul Edge (known as Soul Blade outside of Japan) was a fantastic arcade fighting game that became a hit very quickly.

Namco then released the game on PlayStation, where it was incredibly popular. It’s a remarkably faithful recreation of the arcade version, including all the characters and stages. The full-motion video introduction was also considered one of the best of its time, and combined with a compelling story mode, it cemented the game’s status as a classic fighting game.

5) Bloody Roar 2

The original Bloody Roar was a well-made fighting game, notable for letting characters transform into animals like foxes and tigers during battles. While the first game was good, the series truly shined with its sequel, offering even more exciting and impactful shapeshifting combat.

This installment is a clear improvement – it plays more smoothly, has a more engaging cast of characters, and now includes a satisfying story mode. Players can also perform powerful special attacks that deal huge amounts of damage. While the series lost its way after the second game, this one remains a standout title.

4) Bushido Blade

There’s really nothing quite like Bushido Blade. It features one-on-one matches where players choose characters with unique weapons. Unlike most fighting games, there’s no health bar – a single, accurate hit can instantly win or lose the match.

This fighting game is a really exciting departure from what most others were like at the time. Every action matters, and losing happens quickly. Plus, the Kumite mode – where you fight 100 opponents consecutively – was legendary. If you managed to win that, you instantly became the coolest kid around!

3) Rival Schools: United by Fate

In 1998, Rival Schools was a fantastic value for PlayStation owners. It came with two discs: one featured a close adaptation of the arcade game, and the other included several extra modes, like a helpful training mode to teach players how to use the game’s controls.

Capcom created a diverse roster of 25 characters, each with a distinct fighting style. Unlike some other games, there weren’t any copycat fighters. With team-based moves, powerful launch attacks, and a unique counter system, the game is challenging to learn but incredibly rewarding once you do.

2) Street Fighter Alpha 3

Similar to other popular games here, Street Fighter Alpha 3 was incredibly successful in arcades, and it translated well to home consoles. It was released on the PlayStation, Dreamcast, and Saturn, and fans still debate which console version is superior, but both are considered faithful adaptations of the arcade game.

While it’s not quite as polished as the original arcade version – the AI can be a bit unpredictable in certain modes, likely due to technical limitations – Street Fighter Alpha 3 remains a fantastic way to experience classic Street Fighter gameplay. And unlike some 3D fighting games, its pixel art has aged beautifully.

1) Tekken 3

While some fans prefer Tekken 2, most PlayStation players consider Tekken 3 to be the best fighting game on the system. Many even believe it’s the high point of the entire Tekken series. With 8 million copies sold, it’s the fifth best-selling PlayStation game ever, and that kind of success speaks for itself.

This fighting game from Namco looks fantastic and features incredibly fluid combat. Plus, the soundtrack is amazing! If you’re looking for an adrenaline-pumping fighting experience, this is it. With a strong story campaign, memorable characters, and fun side modes like Tekken Ball and Tekken Force, it’s easily the best fighting game available on this system.
