A highly popular Chinese novel by Yuan Ye, also known as Cuttlefish That Loves Diving, received an animated series adaptation that began airing in 2021. The show became available on Crunchyroll in Summer 2025, reaching a global audience. While Japanese anime is widely popular internationally, Chinese animation is rapidly growing in quality and recognition. Fans of Chinese animation may already be familiar with Link Click, a well-known mystery series that also premiered in 2021 and is available on Crunchyroll.
With growing interest in Chinese animation (donghua), Lord of Mysteries has become a standout series thanks to its impressive animation and captivating story. Although the original novel finished in 2023, the anime hasn’t covered much of the story yet. The author, Cuttlefish That Loves Diving, began a sequel novel in 2024, and it’s still being released chapter by chapter. While fans eagerly anticipate Season 2 of the anime, a new and exciting announcement has been made.
Lord of Mysteries Is Returning With Special Episodes Ahead of Season 2
Crunchyroll and Tencent have announced three special episodes of Lord of Mysteries, starting to stream in June 2026. The first, “City of Silver,” will be available on June 20th. The second and third episodes, titled “The Marked Hunt,” will also be released in June, but their specific release dates are still to come. Crunchyroll’s website shares that these special episodes will continue the story of the main character.
You can watch the anime on Crunchyroll in North and South America, Europe, Australia, the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Asia. Besides Crunchyroll, it will also be available on Tencent Video and Muse in certain areas. The second season is planned for 2027, but there’s no confirmed release date or trailer yet.
What Is Lord of Mysteries About?
This dark fantasy series takes place in a world inspired by Victorian London, but with a unique twist: it’s filled with magic, advanced technology, and a strange, original system of beliefs. The world is controlled by powerful, secretive groups known as the Seven Churches, and individuals can gain incredible abilities through potions and rituals. The story follows Klein Moretti, a college graduate and aspiring detective, who attempts a ritual after a friend’s death. Unexpectedly, this ritual transforms him into a ‘Beyonder’ – a being with supernatural powers.
Shortly after the event, the original Klein is killed. Unexpectedly, Zhou Mingrui, a normal person from Earth, finds himself reborn as Klein. Now possessing memories of his predecessor’s fate and powers, Klein is determined to discover the truth behind the 22 unique Beyonder pathways – each a different way to gain power, but all carrying the danger of insanity or death.
