Casualty star Derek Thompson is set to make a surprise return to the soap two years after his exit.
The actor known for playing Charlie Fairhead, the senior charge nurse, left the BBC series in 2024 after being its longest-running cast member. He had been with the show since it started in 1986.
After a patient stabbed him while attempting to steal medical supplies, the character decided to retire and left Holby City Emergency Department. The incident, where his life was threatened, prompted his decision.
It’s been two years since Charlie left the show, but it looks like he’s coming back! Reports say the actor is currently filming in Wales. A source told The Sun that fans will be thrilled, as the character wasn’t actually killed off and a return was always possible. Viewers will have to tune in to find out what happens next with Charlie’s story.
So, from what I gather, TopMob knows Thompson’s appearance is just a one-off thing, not a full-time comeback. They’re not bringing him back for good, just a guest spot, basically. It’s good they’re being realistic about it.

Throughout his time on Casualty, Thompson was part of many major plotlines, most notably a long-running, on-again, off-again romance with Duffy (Cathy Shipton) that lasted for over three decades.
Recently, this person also provided support to Duffy as she bravely fought vascular dementia before passing away.
Reflecting on his departure in 2024 and the storylines he connected with most, Thompson shared that Charlie’s experience with Duffy’s death from vascular dementia in February 2020 was particularly meaningful to him.
After leaving Casualty, Thompson has played the role of retired police officer Robin Graham in the Northern Irish police drama, Blue Lights.
Previous episodes of Casualty are available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
Casualty returns on Saturday 2 May at 8:45pm on BBC One and 6am on iPlayer.
