As a huge fan, it feels like a real shift is happening with Star Trek. It started quietly, but it’s become clear that the era led by Alex Kurtzman is winding down. Starfleet Academy won’t be getting a third season, and while Strange New Worlds will have a fifth season, it’s going to be shorter, and that feels like that’s it for now. Honestly, it’s a bit unsettling to see things go quiet after so much Trek on TV. With the 60th anniversary coming up in 2026, I was hoping for some big announcements, but lately all we hear about are cancellations and projects that didn’t make the cut. I was especially excited about Star Trek: Legacy, a continuation of Picard, but it’s looking less and less likely to happen. Still, there is a small bit of good news for those of us who love the show.
A new Star Trek novel, Picard: To Defy Fate by Dayton Ward, is now available. It offers fans disappointed by the cancellation of the Legacy series a continuation of the Picard storyline and a look at what might have been. The novel picks up after the end of Picard Season 3, where Captain Shaw (Todd Stashwick) passed command of the USS Titan-A to Seven of Nine, setting her up for greater adventures. A year later, the ship is renamed the Enterprise-G, and Seven takes on the role of captain – a position previously held by some of Starfleet’s most iconic leaders. While Legacy would have explored Seven’s command, To Defy Fate immediately delivers a Star Trek story with her in charge. In that sense, and as a continuation of Picard, the novel feels like a welcome bonus for fans.
Picard: To Defy Fate is a Strong Continuation (& Fills Some Important Gaps)

More than just a continuation of the story we hoped for from Legacy, To Defy Fate feels like a real love letter to dedicated Star Trek fans. At its heart, it’s a story about Wesley Crusher, finally exploring what happened to him after he left with the Traveler at the end of The Next Generation. When a time-traveling villain tries to alter the past to save their family – potentially causing billions of deaths – Wesley joins forces with Jean-Luc Picard, Beverly Crusher, Raffi Mussiker, and Seven of Nine (along with many other familiar faces) to protect the timeline. The story also raises thought-provoking questions about who should be responsible for safeguarding time itself, similar to the TVA in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While we don’t see Seven in full captain mode as much as we might like, her presence is felt throughout, and the series offers a glimpse into a previously unexplored era of Star Trek following the events of Picard Season 3.
“To Defy Fate” feels like a celebration of the best moments from across all of Star Trek’s shows, with the characters traveling through time and revisiting familiar events. While newcomers might find it confusing, it’s likely that anyone picking up this book is already a dedicated fan. The result is a rich and enjoyable story packed with references to classic episodes and movies from The Original Series, Enterprise, The Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine. There are tons of Easter eggs for fans to discover! But more importantly, it’s a compelling story in its own right, and Ward once again demonstrates his talent for crafting narratives that are both genuine and respectful of the source material.
