Mass Effect Fans Might Not Want To Get Their Hopes Up In 2026

Details about the next Mass Effect game have been scarce since it was first announced several years ago. BioWare, the game’s developer, has stated they want to recapture the feel of the original games, setting the new adventure back in the Milky Way Galaxy. Unfortunately, very little has been shared about the game, and some recent changes within the development team may delay any further announcements.

With the ongoing development of the Mass Effect TV show, the video games haven’t been the main focus since 2020. This Amazon Prime production could help prepare fans for Mass Effect 5, whenever that game is released. However, recent games like Mass Effect Andromeda and Dragon Age: The Veilguard didn’t quite meet expectations, leaving many fans curious about the future of the series and eager for more information.

Mass Effect 5’s Production Might Not Be Substantial Enough To Reveal Anything More This Year

BioWare is actively developing the next Mass Effect game, but isn’t ready to share many details yet. In response to a fan question on X (formerly Twitter), franchise head Mike Gamble said the team is “just busy workin’” and doesn’t have time for teasers. This suggests they’re focused on building the core of the game before revealing more. While this confirms progress is being made on Mass Effect 5, there’s still no word on how far along development is or when we might see more updates.

We last heard about the next Mass Effect game in November 2025, when EA shared some concept art and restated their dedication to the series. While a few details about the story and setting have been revealed, it’s still not enough to give players a clear picture of what the game will be like. This slow release of information continues in 2026, suggesting we won’t see a major reveal or gameplay demonstration this year.

As of today, many details about Mass Effect 5 are still unknown, including whether Commander Shepard will return. Development appears to have just begun, so we likely won’t see a trailer or hear significant news about the game’s story until 2027 or 2028. While the new game will almost certainly feature the impactful decisions and strong character connections fans expect, set against a grand galactic backdrop, it looks like we’ll have to be patient for more information.

Previous Layoffs At BioWare Following Dragon Age: The Veilguard May Contribute To Delays

The new Mass Effect game is taking a long time to develop, partly because BioWare has significantly reduced its staff in recent years. The mixed response to and delays with Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024 likely led to layoffs, shrinking the studio to less than half its original size. While BioWare says they don’t currently need as many people for the early stages of Mass Effect 5, it’s difficult to justify such a large and lasting loss of skilled developers.

Fans are worried about the future of BioWare after the criticism surrounding Dragon Age: The Veilguard, particularly its story and gameplay. Because the Mass Effect series has a larger following, the development of its next installment will likely face much closer examination and more revisions than Veilguard did. While this increased scrutiny could lead to a better game, it might also significantly slow down production, especially considering the smaller team currently working on it.

Development Progress Shows Some Features & Characters Returning Despite The Info Drought

Okay, so even with all the layoffs at BioWare, we’re finally getting some news about the next Mass Effect game! It’s awesome to hear Liara’s coming back, though it’s a bit wild that the game takes place 300 years after Mass Effect 3. We don’t know yet if our choices from the end of ME3 will matter, but it’s cool that some familiar faces – like the Geth – will be around. Fingers crossed it all comes together!

The Krogans are returning after a devastating civil war on their home world. Familiar elements from previous Mass Effect games, like the N7 program, will also be present. There are hints that species first seen in Mass Effect Andromeda will reappear, bringing the entire series’ history together. The developers are also planning to include popular features from past installments, such as the Paragon/Renegade system and in-depth companion relationships, to attract both longtime fans and newcomers to Mass Effect 5.

While a return to the Milky Way galaxy suggests a focus on the original Mass Effect experience, BioWare’s current challenges and slow development pace could delay the game significantly. Don’t expect to see a trailer or gameplay reveal for Mass Effect 5 in 2026; the project is still very early in development.
