Wow, last night’s episode was a real shocker! We lost a major character, and I’m still reeling. After it aired, the showrunner, Dario Scardapane, and the actor who played him, Arty Froushan, talked about the scene and revealed they actually filmed a different ending originally. It’s crazy to think how things could have turned out differently!
In last night’s episode of Born Again, titled “The Hateful Darkness,” Buck Cashman unexpectedly kills Deputy Mayor Daniel Blake after Blake refuses to reveal the location of journalist BB Urich to Kingpin’s associate. However, according to actors Scardapane and Froushan, the original scene showed Buck sparing Blake’s life, and the fatal shooting was added later during editing.
Daniel Blake Almost Survived His Encounter With Buck
Froushan remembers the initial filming of the scene showing Buck with his gun aimed at Daniel, who was on the ground, but Buck didn’t fire. He let Daniel go, telling him to run. According to Froushan, Buck was avoiding confronting Fisk, so he lied and claimed he’d killed Daniel, even though he hadn’t.
It appears Wilson Fisk would have soon found out about Daniel’s situation. According to Scardapane, Daniel was intended to remain working for Fisk, even after trying to quit. The new mayor, after Daniel attempted to resign, decided to keep him around specifically because he didn’t trust him.
At first, Scardapane decided to keep Daniel alive because the character repeatedly received second chances and had defended BB, which felt like a debt that haunted Buck. But during editing, the showrunner felt it was a mistake – keeping Daniel alive didn’t feel justified by the story’s events.
In a recent interview with Variety, Scardapane confessed that the decision to keep Blake alive wasn’t very compelling and didn’t really advance the plot. He explained that sometimes storylines are stretched out unnecessarily, and that Blake and Buck’s complex relationship needed a natural conclusion. He felt that everything that happened after that point felt forced and didn’t deliver a satisfying payoff.
Michael Gandolfini Totally Understood Rewriting Daniel Blake’s MCU Ending
James Gandolfini completely agreed with the decision to change the scene and have Daniel Blake’s story conclude with “The Hateful Darkness.” According to Scardapane, he braced himself to deliver the bad news, but Gandolfini immediately understood and said it was the right thing to do. Gandolfini felt that, in that moment, there was no way his character could have left the apartment.
After James Gandolfini joined the project, Scardapane asked the editors to add a gunshot and some computer-generated blood to the climactic fight between Buck and Daniel. The final version was so effective, everyone agreed it was the right decision. The showrunner recalled the moment, saying they quickly created a mock-up and the editing room fell completely silent – mirroring the dramatic ending of the episode. It was a truly impactful scene.
Daniel Blake is the second significant character to die this season of Daredevil: Born Again, following his death in the fifth episode. According to actor Charlie Froushan, this development heightens the tension and was likely needed to move the story forward.
The last episode of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, titled “The Southern Cross,” will be available on Disney+ next Tuesday, May 5th. The following week will bring .
