Copying Gustave mocap’s performance made Charlie Cox’s life “very, very easy”

Everyone expected Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to be a strong contender at the 2026 BAFTA Games Awards, and it lived up to the hype, winning three awards. The game took home prizes for best game, best debut game, and Jennifer English won for her leading performance.

Although many gamers and journalists had already previewed it at E33, the positive reception to the game still surprised Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, the writer, and Kirsty Rider, who voices a character in the game.

To manage expectations and avoid potential disappointment after release, actor Ben Starr even advised his Monoco co-star, Rick Keeble, not to expect the project to succeed. Thankfully, it did succeed, but Starr still chose not to return as Verso in the Clair Obscur film, even though it received positive reviews.

What really grabbed me about Clair Obscur is how much work went into making the characters feel real. It wasn’t just one actor playing each role – they actually used different people for the motion capture and voice acting. For example, they had Maxence Cazorla do the motion capture for Gustave, but Charlie Cox was the one who actually voiced him in English. It’s a cool way to build up a character, having different talents contribute!

After a successful performance, the TopMob Gaming team wanted to know how Cox developed his portrayal of Gustave. He admitted he wasn’t immediately confident about his approach.

Courteney Cox admitted she was surprised by the voiceover work involved when she started the job. She shared this on the red carpet at the BAFTA Games Awards.

While watching his performance, I immediately asked the show’s creators if they wanted me to put my own spin on the role, or if they expected me to simply replicate his original vocal performance, as he had done.

The entire cast of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 delivered outstanding performances, but Cox particularly praised Cazorla, calling his contribution essential and praising the extensive effort he put in over the past year and a half.

Regarding the upcoming live-action adaptation of Clair Obscur, Kate Cox believes Robert Pattinson would be perfect for the role of Gustave, as long as he provides the character’s voice.
