After his Netflix series ended in 2018, Luke Cage hasn’t appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But now, a decade after the show first aired, the MCU is finally bringing Luke Cage’s story to life in a way fans have long hoped for. Luke Cage was a standout character from the Netflix ‘Defenders’ shows, so his absence has been noticeable. Fortunately, it looks like he’s returning, though his story will unfold differently than many expected.
The second season of Daredevil: Born Again is almost finished, and it’s done the most to connect the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the old Defenders shows. We already knew the original Daredevil series from Netflix was officially part of the MCU, but this season has really brought the Defenders back, with Jessica Jones already playing a significant part. It looks like Luke Cage might be appearing soon, too.
Luke Cage Is Technically A “Hero For Hire” In Born Again Season 2

Luke Cage is officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe again! His name was mentioned in the seventh episode of Daredevil: Born Again, establishing his existence within the shared storyline. In the episode, Jessica Jones kidnaps a man named Mr. Charles after his associates attacked her home while her daughter was present. Charles retaliates by revealing he’s the only one who knows Luke’s whereabouts. It appears Luke is currently working abroad for the government, likely using his powers to assist them.
There’s a major development in the Marvel Cinematic Universe regarding Luke Cage. When we last saw him, it appeared he was taking over the criminal underworld of Harlem after dismantling the old one. Now, he’s unexpectedly working on missions for the U.S. government, and the reason behind this shift remains a mystery.
It appears Luke Cage is now essentially a hero for hire, as he’s being paid by the government for his missions. Fans have long hoped to see a ‘Heroes for Hire’ storyline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring Luke and Iron Fist offering their services for a price. While this isn’t a direct adaptation of that storyline, Luke accepting payment from the government is the closest the MCU has come to realizing that concept.
Everything we’ve discussed is just a guess, based on a short scene in Born Again. We need more information to understand Luke Cage’s motivations. It’s possible he’s being compelled to act this way, which might explain why Charles is keeping Jessica distant. Alternatively, Luke—and perhaps Danny—could be taking on these assignments willingly. We still don’t know the specifics of his mission, and that remains a key mystery for the MCU to resolve.
Could Luke Cage Join A New Thunderbolts Team?

Looking ahead, Luke Cage could potentially join the Thunderbolts in the MCU. We already know he’s connected to Valentina Allegra de Fontaine through his work with Charles, who was part of her original Thunderbolts team. Now that the public knows about the first team, Valentina might be assembling a new group of heroes and villains for covert operations. Luke’s unassuming look combined with his impressive abilities would make him an ideal fit for this new team.
Luke Cage has led the Thunderbolts team in the comics before, so it’s a logical step for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to explore that storyline. Featuring characters with ties to The Defenders, such as Luke Cage and Bullseye, would help this new team stand out from past iterations and allow a potential movie to feel like both a sequel and a reimagining.
There’s still much to reveal about how this story will unfold. Strong reports suggest Luke Cage will be in season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again, which likely means he isn’t currently joining the Thunderbolts team. However, that season could lay the groundwork for where the Defenders characters fit into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
