For decades, The Lord of the Rings has been a hugely popular franchise. This is thanks to both J.R.R. Tolkien’s books, which are widely considered classics, and Peter Jackson’s films – especially the first trilogy, which was a major hit and remains among the best fantasy movies ever made. A key reason the films succeeded was their faithfulness to the original books.
While the three Lord of the Rings films—The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King—did make some alterations to the characters and plot, they generally stayed true to the spirit of Tolkien’s original books. However, one significant element was left out of Jackson’s movies, a change that many fans have noticed and been disappointed by.
Tom Bombadil Wasn’t In Peter Jackson’s Movies

Tom Bombadil, a powerful and enigmatic figure from the books, didn’t appear in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films. He’s one of the strongest beings in Middle-earth, but he plays a relatively minor role in the main story, though he does occasionally help the characters. In fact, he’s the one who saves the hobbits during the events in the Barrow-downs, a story that will be featured in the upcoming movie, The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. However, he isn’t essential to the quest to destroy the One Ring.
Tom Bombadil recently appeared in season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and is likely to return in season 3. It will be fascinating to see how the show handles such a unique and complicated character. However, Peter Jackson made a good decision by leaving him out of his original film trilogy.
Jackson Had Good Reason For Cutting Tom Bombadil

Now that Tom Bombadil has finally appeared on screen, Peter Jackson’s decision to leave him out of the films still seems reasonable. Tom doesn’t significantly advance the story; although he does rescue the hobbits in The Fellowship of the Ring, the plot works perfectly well without him. Introducing a character who creates more questions than answers wouldn’t have been worth the effort.
Another important point, and one Jackson likely thought about, is how incredibly powerful the character would be. The Lord of the Rings already features many powerful beings like Sauron, Saruman, Gandalf, and Galadriel. Adding another character—especially one even more powerful than them—would have created unnecessary complexity.
Tom Bombadil Just Doesn’t Work On The Big Screen

Tom Bombadil might return to the screen in two upcoming Lord of the Rings projects. He’s almost certain to be included in the third season of The Rings of Power, and because he’s now part of the on-screen Lord of the Rings universe, a return in Shadow of the Past is also likely. However, whether including him is the best decision is a different matter.
Bringing Tom into Shadow of the Past feels right for the story, since he played a role in the original book. However, his absence from the first three movies would become noticeable, and that could upset fans. A major worry for viewers is that the new films might negatively impact their love for the originals, and including Tom now could fuel that concern. Even if the original movies weren’t actually harmed, it would likely add to those complaints.
The challenges of including Tom Bombadil in a movie adaptation of The Lord of the Rings still exist. His immense power doesn’t easily fit into a story, and his enigmatic personality might confuse or alienate viewers. It likely makes the most sense for any future Lord of the Rings films to leave him out—letting his story remain in the books and The Rings of Power series—but it’s still uncertain whether they will.
