Can you believe it? Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year! To mark the occasion, Marvel Comics is releasing five separate comics, each focusing on a different character and their story before the events of the film. The first, Star Wars: Rogue One – Cassian Andor #1, comes out on May 6th, just in time for May the Fourth celebrations. However, it’s the second comic, arriving in stores on June 3rd, that fans are really looking forward to.
The new comic book, Star Wars: Rogue One — Jyn Erso #1, written by Ethan Sacks and illustrated by Ramon Rasonos, explores Jyn Erso’s challenging past on the dangerous planet Wobani. The story reveals Jyn, known as Liana Hallik while imprisoned, attempting a daring escape. We talked to Sacks about what inspired him about Jyn and what sets this story apart, and we’re sharing a sneak peek at the first issue.
Star Wars: Rogue One — Jyn Erso Reminds Readers of the Hero’s Journey

It’s clear you’re a big Star Wars fan – I especially loved the Jango Fett series myself! What’s it been like returning to the world of Rogue One and the character of Jyn Erso as we celebrate the 10th anniversary?
As a longtime Star Wars fan, I’ve been wanting to explore Jyn Erso’s story for years, and the timing couldn’t be better – it’s the tenth anniversary of Rogue One! I remember seeing the premiere in Los Angeles a decade ago, and honestly, that film hasn’t left my mind since. It’s become my favorite Star Wars movie since The Empire Strikes Back – high praise, I know! What always grabbed me about Star Wars wasn’t the Jedi or Sith, but the ordinary people, the rebels and rogues operating in the shadows. I love that morally grey area, those characters who rely on their wits and skills, not superpowers. And Jyn Erso? She’s the perfect example of that spirit.

Many fans really love Rogue One and the character Jyn Erso. What was it like exploring her story, and did you discover anything unexpected about her?
Aside from rewatching Rogue One (again!), researching this topic led me back to Beth Revis’s fantastic novel, Rebel Rising. It beautifully tells the story of Jyn Erso’s life, from her days as a rebel to her skills as a hacker, and really helped me understand her motivations. It struck me how much hardship she endured and how incredible it is that she became the person we see in the movie, shaped by her past experiences. I find her truly inspiring.

You’ve worked on several series, like Jango Fett. How did your approach to storytelling differ when creating this new series within the vast Star Wars universe?
Knowing you have a specific length for a story—like a set number of pages or issues—helps you focus on the most important parts: the main character and how they change. Some stories are perfect as short pieces, while others need more space, like a mini-series or an ongoing comic. A longer format, like the ‘Bounty Hunters’ series, lets you really explore a character’s growth through challenges. This particular story about Jyn Erso works well because it’s a complete, self-contained adventure, showing us who she is during a risky and sad escape from an Imperial work camp on Wobani. And it definitely looks amazing thanks to the incredible artwork by Ramon Rosanas.

And because I have to ask: who is your favorite Star Wars character?
It might be surprising, but Jyn Erso and Boba Fett are equally my favorite Star Wars characters. Having lost my father when I was 22, I deeply connect with both of their stories of loss and how they honor their parents while forging their own paths. These stories resonate with me on a personal level. I admire how Jyn has held onto her goodness despite everything she’s been through. Given how impactful her story in “Stardust” was, I’m determined to explore more of her life before the events of Rogue One. As for Boba Fett, I have his spaceship, the Firespray, as a keychain – that’s how much I’ve always loved him! I was captivated by his appearance, attitude, and cool gadgets ever since I received a mail-in action figure as a child, before Empire Strikes Back came out. But it’s only as an adult that I’ve truly come to appreciate the depth of his character.
Everything You Need to Know About Star Wars: Rogue One – Jyn Erso #1
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really excited about the first issue of the new Rogue One comic, focusing on Jyn Erso! It kicks off with Jyn stuck in a really rough situation on the dangerous planet Wobani. She’s going about her harsh daily life when a desperate group asks her – and her hacking skills – to help them escape what seems like an impossible situation. The story promises a thrilling race against time as Jyn tries to bypass Imperial defenses – think security droids, towers, and incinerators – all while trying to protect a scared young person. It also sounds like we’ll get a glimpse into Jyn’s past and how relationships with Galen, Lyra, and Saw shaped who she is. Will she overcome everything, or will Wobani be the end of her story before she can even join the Rebellion? It hits shelves on June 3rd, and I can’t wait to read it!
