Maul Star Sam Witwer Addresses Star Wars Fan Demands Ahead of Finale [Exclusive]

A standout feature of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is its engaging set of characters. While fans are thrilled to see Maul explored in a new light, the series also introduces compelling new faces that quickly make an impact. Devon Izara, a former Jedi Padawan who escaped Order 66 with her master, Eeko-Dio Daki, is particularly captivating. She’s repeatedly found herself targeted by Maul, but their relationship hasn’t developed as some viewers might expect. Some fans anticipate Devon becoming Maul’s apprentice, but according to Sam Witwer, she’s actually been fulfilling that role all along.

In a recent ComicBook interview, Witwer discussed fan reactions to Shadow Lord, specifically noting the humor in complaints about not seeing Maul train an apprentice. He revealed that we are seeing this training happen, starting earlier in the show with the character Devon. “Whether she realizes it or not, Maul is constantly teaching her things whenever they cross paths,” Witwer explained. “It’s interesting to see if she’ll accept his lessons or reject them, but he’s always trying to guide her. I really enjoy that dynamic.”

He explained that shaping an apprentice happens whether the person being mentored agrees with the process or not, and described it as a fascinating, but unsettling, and even frightening, way to learn.

Devon’s Fate Is One of the Biggest Questions for the Shadow Lord Finale

Throughout the story, Devon hasn’t fully committed to Maul’s teachings and remains wary of him, despite their shared opposition to the Empire. She still appears dedicated to the light side, though her resolve is beginning to waver. From the start, Devon’s impulsive nature – demonstrated by her immediate act of stealing from a fruit stand – sets her apart from her more traditional master, Eeko-Dio. While Eeko-Dio strictly adheres to Jedi principles, Devon seems willing to adapt and change.

An interesting tension exists between Devon and her two mentors. Eeko-Dio acts as a positive influence, guiding her toward the Jedi path, while Maul constantly tries to turn her to the dark side and use her for his own goals. Maul believes Devon has great potential and wants to exploit her anger towards the Empire to strengthen his criminal network and ultimately overthrow Darth Sidious. So far, Devon has resisted Maul’s influence thanks to Eeko-Dio, but with only two episodes left in Season 1, the future is uncertain. If Eeko-Dio were to die – a common fate for mentors in Star Wars – Devon might become more vulnerable to Maul’s manipulation.

Now that Season 2 of Maul – Shadow Lord is confirmed, it’s likely Devon’s storyline will continue. The first season might end with Devon deciding whether to join forces with Maul. The show has been hinting at this pivotal moment for her, and the story can’t stall any longer. Even if Eeko-Dio lives through the season, it would make sense for Devon to become Maul’s apprentice – even if just for a while – as she believes it’s the best way to oppose the Empire.

Letting Maul train her could make Devon a more compelling character as the story progresses. If she continues to follow the Jedi path and rejects Maul, the second season risks becoming repetitive. Accepting Maul as her mentor would allow the writers to explore their relationship in new ways and create exciting character moments. Maybe Devon needs to briefly question her beliefs and explore a darker path to strengthen her commitment to Eeko-Dio’s teachings.
