Next week, Netflix will release a new 6-episode gangster thriller based on a true story. Many are predicting it will be one of the best new shows in May. The series, which stars a well-known cast and has a captivating story, becomes available on May 7, 2026, and the trailer has already generated a lot of excitement.
Legends, starring Steve Coogan and Tom Burke, tells the true story of how everyday people were secretly turned into undercover agents to take down dangerous drug rings in 1990s Britain. The series focuses on Guy (Burke), an ordinary customs worker, who is recruited by Don (Coogan) to assume a completely new identity for a covert operation. These agents, known only as “legends,” were remarkable because they had no formal spy training.
Legends Arrives On Netflix Soon – What It’s About
The trailer shows that Legends tells the incredible true story of a group of unsung heroes. The series starts with a serious national security issue in the UK: illegal drugs were being smuggled into the country unchecked. That’s when Don steps in, leading an effort to transform ordinary Customs workers into a covert team to tackle the problem.
The new Netflix series, Legends, immediately raises a fascinating question: why did Don choose to train newcomers instead of hiring seasoned spies? The answer will be revealed early in the show, which premieres next week. Another mystery is why this story, set in the 1990s, has remained largely unknown for over 30 years. Because it’s been hidden for so long, the series promises to be as captivating and surprising as a fictional drama – something rarely seen in shows based on real events and people.
Neil Forsyth, the creator of the show The Gold, discussed with Netflix how unusual it is to create a true crime series like Legends that actually benefits from being based on a relatively obscure case. He explained that he’s often written shows about famous events, focusing on lesser-known details, but Legends is different because almost no one knows the story of the undercover unit at its heart. The series is based on Guy Stanton’s 2022 book, The Betrayer: How an Undercover Unit Infiltrated the Global Drug Trade, which inspired the main character, and also draws on extensive interviews with the real undercover operatives involved.
Legends Portrays A Remarkable & Untold True Crime Story
Guy Stanton is a typical Customs officer who became a real-life hero. For 11 years during his 35-year career, he went undercover, posing as a drug importer connected to a Turkish crime group. Meanwhile, his colleagues Kate and Bailey tracked the flow of drugs through Liverpool, a city controlled by powerful kingpin Carter. Guy constantly risked being discovered, knowing his family could be in danger.
The upcoming Netflix series, Legends, has all the makings of a standout show in 2026. Based on a gripping true story with constant, high-stakes tension, Legends is both entertaining and deserving of wider recognition. All six episodes will be available on Netflix starting Thursday, May 7th, so be sure to check it out next week!
