A fantastic new series has been released, continuing the exploration of the Sith’s history. The popular animated show is nearing the end of its first season, which centers on Sam Witwer’s character as he tries to restore his criminal organization following the Republic’s collapse and the Empire’s ascent. Having launched with a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the series is quickly adding to the rich lore of Star Wars.
Episode eight of Maul – Shadow Lord, titled “The Creeping Fear,” features unexpected glimpses into the character’s past. While this episode reveals more of Maul’s backstory than ever before, some mysteries about his origins remain. Following these flashbacks, Star Wars has a great chance to expand on this history as a prequel.
Star Wars Needs a Darth Maul Prequel Series
The eighth episode of Maul – Shadow Lord follows Maul as he fights to rejoin his enemies after a difficult battle with two Inquisitors. While traveling through tunnels, he remembers his past, including his training with his old master, Darth Sidious.
Viewers only see a small part of the complicated connection between Darth Maul and Darth Sidious. Sidious acts as expected, severely punishing Maul with Force lightning whenever he fails. However, it’s Maul who stands out. Unlike the angry figure he later becomes, young Maul is surprisingly naive and fragile, revealing a completely new side to his personality decades after his initial appearance.
The comic series Maul – Shadow Lord connects the character’s established history with the start of the Rebels TV show. It could have concluded Maul’s story, but instead, the comic’s flashbacks to his childhood suggest there’s potential for further exploration of this popular Sith Lord’s backstory.
A story focusing on Darth Maul’s early training with Darth Sidious would offer a fascinating look into the Sith’s apprenticeship methods. We’ve only seen bits and pieces of this process before in other Star Wars films and series. Now, Star Wars is allowing for a much deeper exploration of how a new Sith Lord is created. A series with Maul as the main character would complete his story arc, showing everything from his initial training to his death in Rebels.
This prequel would work best with a similar tone to the original show, fitting its dark themes. However, it doesn’t necessarily need to focus on Darth Maul again if Lucasfilm wants to try something different. A shorter series, like a collection of stories similar to Tales of the Sith, could be a good approach. Another option would be to tell the story through the eyes of a character connected to Maul, but not Maul himself.
A Maul Prequel Would Be a Perfect Showcase of Star Wars’ Best Villain
Though Darth Maul was a striking figure, his manipulative mentor was the true power behind the scenes. Darth Sidious, also known as Sheev Palpatine, consistently operates from the shadows, subtly controlling the events of the entire Star Wars saga like a puppet master. While crucial to all three Star Wars trilogies, Palpatine usually appears and disappears as the story requires. A prequel focused on Darth Maul could shift that dynamic and give Palpatine a more central role.
Exploring Darth Maul’s initial training as a Sith could be a great way to expand Darth Sidious’s role in Star Wars. Surprisingly, despite being a major character for decades, Sidious hasn’t been featured in many action scenes. He only participates in three lightsaber duels throughout the entire Skywalker Saga, with a few other brief action moments added in.
Showing Darth Sidious as a younger man would allow Star Wars fans to see him training Darth Maul. We’d finally get a full look at his incredible Force abilities and frightening lightsaber skills as he teaches Maul everything he knows.
It would be especially fascinating to expand the Star Wars story by exploring the time before The Phantom Menace, focusing on Darth Sidious and his apprentice, Darth Maul. Existing stories suggest Maul was already serving Sidious before the murder of his master. This could allow Star Wars to delve deeper into Sidious’s own apprenticeship and potentially show the events he recounts to Anakin in Revenge of the Sith.
This is a great chance to delve deeper into the history of . Many people who only enjoy the films and TV series might not realize the plot that led to the Jedi Purge wasn’t Darth Sidious’s idea – it actually began thousands of years ago. It would be fascinating to see how this plan developed and evolved over millennia, ultimately leading to the events in Revenge of the Sith.
Maul: Shadow Lord May Have Saved Star Wars
The recent Disney era of Star Wars has definitely sparked a lot of debate among fans, with disagreements over nearly every new film and series. While Andor is widely considered a fantastic show, rivaling top-tier television, Maul – Shadow Lord appears to be the only other Star Wars project that most fans actually agree is good.
Darth Maul’s new series could change the direction of Star Wars and help the franchise continue its success, likely through more animation similar to The Clone Wars. The Bad Batch is already proving popular, and could potentially run for a long time, depending on the creators’ plans. Star Wars often revisits its animated shows, like the Tales of… series, which typically gets new seasons every few years.
The franchise could also explore more complex and mature themes. While Star Wars has traditionally been aimed at younger viewers, many longtime fans now want stories with more depth. Maul demonstrates that Star Wars can successfully handle more adult narratives, even as other content continues to appeal to children and build new audiences.
Before Maul – Shadow Lord came out, Star Wars wasn’t about to be canceled, but it was losing popularity and could have faced serious problems. The newest animated series offers a promising new direction that could keep the franchise going strong for years to come.
