A recent leak about the new Nintendo Switch 2 suggests the return of a popular series that last appeared on the 3DS in 2019. Although the 3DS didn’t have as many critically acclaimed blockbusters as other Nintendo consoles, it featured a huge number of games. Because the 3DS had limited hardware, Nintendo often took risks and tried new things with its game development, leading to the creation of this particular series.
HAL Laboratory, famous for the Kirby games, and Nintendo first released BoxBoy on the Nintendo 3DS in 2015. It was a successful puzzle platformer, earning a score of 80 on Metacritic and performing well enough to justify two sequels in 2016 and 2017, all exclusive to the 3DS. In 2019, the series expanded to a new platform with BoxBoy + BoxGirl on the Nintendo Switch. The series has been quiet since then, but now that game has been rated for release on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo Switch 2 Port Releasing Soon
Taiwan’s rating board has revealed that a port of the game is coming soon, and that a new release is planned. Games are typically submitted for rating late in development, so this suggests an announcement is imminent. It’s also interesting because the original 2019 Switch version received good reviews (81 on Metacritic) but didn’t sell particularly well. This makes Nintendo’s investment in a new version somewhat puzzling, unless they have future plans for the series. Currently, it’s unclear why they’re revisiting the game after seven years, but it seems a return is definitely happening.
As of right now, neither HAL Laboratory nor Nintendo has officially responded to this leak, and we don’t anticipate they will. However, we’ll be sure to update this article if they do. 3DS fans should watch the next Nintendo Direct presentation – this port might be revealed there.
