Paramount’s Surprise New World War Z Movie Announcement Gets First Response From Original Star

Audiences aren’t the only ones hopeful about Paramount’s recent new World War Z movie confirmation.

After the action-horror movie starring Brad Pitt – based on Max Brooks’ book of the same name – became a huge hit, the studio quickly began planning a follow-up. They almost made it happen in mid-2017 when David Fincher, who had previously directed Brad Pitt in films like Se7en, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, signed on to direct. However, the sequel was ultimately cancelled in early 2019.

A big surprise at Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation in April was the announcement of a new World War Z movie. Fans were excited about the possibility of continuing the zombie story, but many wondered how it would connect to the original film starring Brad Pitt, since no details about the director, writers, cast, or release date had been revealed.

Mireille Enos recently spoke with ScreenRant about the possibility of a new World War Z movie while promoting season 5 of For All Mankind. Enos, who starred alongside Brad Pitt in the original film, jokingly mentioned that Paramount has been talking about a sequel “for 15 years.” She acknowledged the difficulties in getting a follow-up made, explaining that numerous script drafts have been developed over time.

The Emmy-nominated actress shared that she’s really hoping a new World War Z movie gets made and that her character could be involved. While she admits she doesn’t know anything about the potential film, she thinks it would be amazing to work with Brad Pitt again on the project.

For the past 15 years, there’s been talk of a potential sequel to ‘World War Z,’ and sometimes it seemed promising. My character was part of those discussions, but right now, I don’t have any confirmed details about whether a second movie will actually happen.

During their presentation at CinemaCon in April 2026, Paramount announced several upcoming sequels and new movies. Among them was a new World War Z film. After a long development process, Tom Cruise is confirmed to return for Top Gun 3. A movie based on Call of Duty by Taylor Sheridan is scheduled for release in June 2028, and Paramount also confirmed that new installments of Star Trek and G.I. Joe are officially being developed.

I was really excited to hear Enos talk about working on earlier drafts of the World War Z sequel! It’s the first real confirmation that she was going to reprise her role as Karin, and honestly, it makes total sense. For a long time, Brad Pitt was the only actor publicly connected to the project, but given how the first movie ended – with Gerry returning to Karin and their kids – it always felt likely she’d be involved in some way. It’s great to finally have that confirmed!

Director David Fincher has mentioned his initial script for a sequel was quite similar to The Last of Us in terms of story and mood. This suggests the new World War Z movie will likely be different from what was originally planned. Because Brad Pitt was a producer on the first successful film and is reportedly still involved with the new one, there’s a good chance we’ll see the return of his character, possibly in a significantly changed role.
