Let me tell you, when Anne from Beyond Paradise casually dropped the news that she’d landed a spot on the police and crime panel thanks to her work as a councillor, her husband Humphrey was not happy. It wasn’t just a little disappointment, either – he was genuinely upset. You could practically see the steam coming out of his ears!
The detective inspector was already stressed – his boss, the unpleasant Mr. Smith, had ordered him to let someone on his team go because of budget cuts. Now, to make things worse, his mother-in-law was going to be closely monitoring his work.
She finished her announcement with a hopeful, ‘I hope this isn’t an issue,’ but Humphrey’s expression clearly indicated he disagreed.
Surprisingly, Anne accidentally getting involved in Humphrey’s work ended up being a stroke of luck – it was exactly what he needed to succeed.
When Humphrey bravely put himself in danger to protect his teammates, Anne felt a sudden, strong intuition that something was about to happen.
I just didn’t believe it,” she explained during an urgent meeting with her son-in-law, Mr. Smith, and other important people.
Her doubts grew when she noticed Mr. Smith being unusually friendly with a detective inspector from a different police station during a golf outing. He was the only officer of that rank present, which led her to start investigating on her own.

She stumbled into the records room at Shipton Abbott police station and discovered a surprising fact: the previous year’s budget hadn’t been fully spent. This caused the officers present to burst out laughing, exclaiming how unusual that was given the current economic climate.
However, council records revealed that another station actually gained the same amount of funding that Shipton Abbott was being asked to cut.
Knowing this, Anne invited Humphrey and his boss to dinner, pretending she wanted to help them connect. However, it was a trick – she really wanted to get access to Mr. Smith’s phone to collect information.
Anne had no doubt Mr. Smith was letting his affair influence his financial choices after seeing several flirtatious messages between him and his mistress. The final proof came when she and colleagues Martha and Kelby caught him kissing his mistress during a surveillance operation.

Anne powerfully stated that exploiting public funds for personal benefit is corruption, then silenced Mr. Smith by showing him a photograph.
He quickly left the room, his professional and personal life falling apart. Humphrey was put back in his position after the station received its funding again.
It’s a relief that Mr. Smith is finally dealt with, and honestly, seeing him struggle as Anne skillfully uncovered the truth was even more rewarding than I expected.
Now, onto the next big dilemma: who’s going to save Humphrey when Anne comes for his job?
Watch out, Goodman — there’s a new sleuth in town.
