Bill Pullman is letting Lewis Pullman be a maverick.
With his career continuing to take off, especially after starring in Top Gun: Maverick, the actor shared valuable advice he’s received from his experienced actor father to help him handle his growing success.
Lewis shared with TopMob News’ Will Marfuggi at the premiere of his film, Remarkably Bright Creatures, that someone is a strong supporter and offers helpful career guidance, but isn’t overbearing or controlling with advice. He explained that this person doesn’t tell him exactly how to do things.
The 33-year-old made it clear that he’s not simply copying the style of the While You Were Sleeping actress.
Lewis explained that he’s given the freedom to learn and grow through his own experiences, including making and learning from mistakes, which has been incredibly beneficial.
Interestingly, the actor’s career has sometimes mirrored his father’s. He appears with Sally Field in Remarkably Bright Creatures, just as his father did in the 2019 National Theatre Live production of All My Sons.
Lewis watched his father act in a World War II movie, but he confessed he never met Sally, explaining that his feelings about the film kept them apart.
Lewis said watching his family portray that story was both moving and difficult. He found the narrative deeply upsetting and was so affected by it that he couldn’t bring himself to talk to Sally about it afterward.
Fortunately, Lewis and Sally had instant chemistry when they first met on the set of Remarkably Bright Creatures, which comes out on May 8th.
Lewis described working with the Steel Magnolias star as consistently fresh and unexpected. He explained that she’s incredibly dynamic on set, being fully present and trusting her intuition. Because she had such a deep understanding of both her character and the story, Lewis felt his role was simply to respond to her performance, which he found liberating and thrilling.
