It’s always great to see older games updated for today’s consoles. These re-releases let longtime fans enjoy their favorites again and introduce classic titles to new players. We’ve seen a lot of good ones recently, like the unexpected arrival of Pokemon FireRed and Leaf Green on Switch and collections such as the upcoming Rugrats Retro Rewind. Now, strategy game fans in the U.S. have something new to get excited about: a Sega game that was previously only available in Japan is coming to modern consoles.
The first Culdcept game came out in Japan for the Sega Saturn in 1997 and launched a popular series of turn-based strategy games that feel like playing a board game. While newer Culdcept titles have been released in North America, the original game, Culdcept the First, has never been available in English – until now. An enhanced version called Culdcept the First Saturn Tribute is coming soon to modern consoles with English subtitles.
Culdcept the First Saturn Tribute Brings Original That Sparked Retro Strategy Series to Modern Consoles

Released in 1997, Culdcept the First quickly gained a dedicated following in Japan as a unique blend of dice rolling, card strategy, and real-time tactics. While later versions of the game made their way to the U.S., the original has never been readily available in English – until now. This first game introduces players to the world of Culdra Space, where they become Ceptors wielding magical books with the power to create and conquer. Players travel across Culdra Space, battling opponents and claiming territory using strategic card play.
Culdcept the First blends the strategy of board games with the fun of deckbuilding and collecting creatures – it’s a classic that inspired many popular games we enjoy today. Now, fans will finally be able to play the original on today’s consoles, experiencing the game that started it all. You can watch the announcement trailer below to see the updated version, Culdcept the First Saturn Tribute.
This updated release reimagines the original classic with modern improvements, such as helpful quality-of-life features and, for the first time, English subtitles. Here’s what’s new:
- Rewind feature to return to prior Checkpoints along the way
- Quick Save to easily save your progress to pick back up where you left out, outside of the classic’s original save function
- Optional Bonus Pack that adds more reward cards at the end of matches
- Optional Reveal Hands feature that lets you view your own and the opponent’s hand at any time
- Language Switching to toggle between Japanese and English
If you enjoy classic deckbuilding games, Culdcept the First Saturn Tribute is worth checking out. It’s coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, and Clear River Games will release it both digitally and as a physical copy. The standard version will cost $34.99, while a deluxe version will be available for $79.99. A specific release date hasn’t been announced yet.
I’m a big fan of the Culdcept games, and I was wondering if anyone else here is too! Let’s chat about them over on the ComicBook Forum – come join me and share your thoughts!
