Okay, so I’ve been totally hooked on Dungeon Crawler Carl lately, and seriously, it’s become one of my favorite sci-fi series. It’s about this Coast Guard vet, Carl, and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut – yeah, the cat is a big deal! – who somehow survive the end of the world and end up competing in this insane intergalactic dungeon crawl that’s basically a reality TV show. It’s packed with action, genuinely funny, and has a surprising amount of heart. The way Matt Dinniman brings the RPG experience to life on the page is just fantastic. And the best part? Another book is coming out in May, and they’re even making a TV series! It’s a real phenomenon, and I can’t wait to see where it goes.
Finished reading the Dungeon Crawler Carl books and looking for something new? We’ve previously shared recommendations for other books and movies, and even suggestions for Dungeons & Dragons fans. Now, we’re diving into the world of comics with five picks that capture a similar feel or explore related themes, even if they aren’t exactly like Dungeon Crawler Carl.
5) I Hate Fairyland

You might be thinking this isn’t science fiction, and you’d be right! But sci-fi and fantasy often overlap, and when recommending comics like Dungeon Crawler Carl, we can’t leave out I Hate Fairyland. This series follows Gert, a six-year-old girl who gets transported to Fairyland and accidentally stays for nearly 30 years. Now, she’s perpetually angry, doesn’t age, and is determined to find her way home – and she has a huge axe to help her do it. Like Dungeon Crawler Carl, it’s about someone unexpectedly thrown into a bizarre world and forced to fight to escape, but I Hate Fairyland is much more violent and often darkly humorous.
4) Fear Agent

Created by Rick Remender with artwork by Tony Moore and Jerome Opena, Fear Agent centers around Heath Huston, a hard-drinking Texas mercenary who travels through space. He’s part of a team dedicated to eliminating alien threats, but after a close call on one planet, he finds himself investigating a deserted space station and encountering truly frightening creatures. The series ran for six years and spanned 32 issues, exploring several different storylines. Similar to Dungeon Crawler Carl, Fear Agent features a flawed and unwilling hero, but it’s also packed with intense action, dark comedy, and a strong focus on survival—all while throwing plenty of aliens into the mix.
3) Lazarus

Though seemingly different from Dungeon Crawler Carl, the sci-fi series Lazarus, created by Greg Rucka and Michael Lark, is still a compelling read. The story centers on Forever Carlyle, a genetically engineered protector of the powerful Carlyle family. Set in a bleak, feudal future, Forever uncovers secrets about herself and her family’s impact on the world. While the setting is harsh and violent, Lazarus shares similarities with Dungeon Crawler Carl, notably its insightful social criticism and the dangerous challenges its main character faces.
2) Radiant Black

I’m really enjoying Radiant Black from Image Comics! It’s about a guy named Nathan Burnett, who’s in his thirties and feeling a bit lost, until he stumbles upon this incredible cosmic power. It totally flips his life around, but it turns out there are powerful beings who created that power and want it back – and they’re not playing around! It reminds me a bit of Dungeon Crawler Carl in that both main characters are struggling when everything changes, and it’s got some really interesting things to say about the world around us. Plus, it’s just a fantastic story and it’s all connected to a bigger universe they’re building, which is awesome!
1) Dungeon Crawler Carl

Of course, Dungeon Crawler Carl is on this list! After becoming popular on Webtoon in 2025, the story is now available as a graphic novel, with the first volume released on May 19th. If you loved the book, you’ll likely enjoy this comic book version. Comics are a fantastic way to visually bring stories to life in a way that’s hard to achieve with words alone. Plus, the artwork by Princess Donut in the Webtoon series is truly outstanding and a major highlight!
