Phantom Blade Zero’s Side Content Can “Influence” the Main Story, But There’s No “Honor System”

Following an initial statement suggesting players would be rewarded for “honorable” behavior in Phantom Blade Zero, S-Game has clarified that there isn’t a formal “honor system.” Instead, completing optional side quests will affect how the main story unfolds.

Beyond the main story, which will take 20 to 30 hours to complete, players will meet various characters with their own personal tales. According to Soulframe Liang, the game’s producer and director, even small choices and interactions with these characters can have a significant impact on the overall story – essentially, your actions shape who you become and how the quest unfolds.

He didn’t explain the choices you’ll have to make, or what the right thing to do even is. Expect those decisions to be complicated, not simple. Helping these strangers, however, might be the key to saving the main character, Soul, from a terrible outcome. We’ve seen this kind of setup in games like Black Myth: Wukong, so it’s likely this path will lead to the best possible ending.

The action RPG Phantom Blade Zero will be released on September 9th for PlayStation 5 and PC. The developers at S-Game say the game is nearly finished. Interestingly, even after reducing some content based on feedback from the developers of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the game still offers so much side content that players could easily spend 50 hours exploring everything.

Liang also mentioned that players will likely only see about 30% of the game during their initial play. Fans are wondering if there will be additional content available in New Game Plus, beyond the existing side quests. We’ll have to wait and see, so keep an eye out for future announcements.
