9) Star Trek – Tubi
The 2009 Star Trek film, featuring a fresh take on classic characters, is now available on Tubi. It tells the story of a young James T. 6) Rise of the Planet of the Apes – Tubi
Before the events of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Rise of the Planet of the Apes explains how the devastating simian flu began. The film focuses on Will Rodman (James Franco), a San Francisco scientist searching for a cure for his father’s Alzheimer’s disease. Though his research is ultimately unsuccessful and shut down, Will takes in Caesar (Andy Serkis), a baby chimpanzee who was exposed to the experimental drug while still in his mother’s womb. When Caesar shows remarkable intelligence, Will secretly continues his work. Caesar’s story is surprisingly touching, and both Andy Serkis and James Franco deliver strong performances. The movie has a surprising amount of emotional depth, making it a worthwhile watch – especially if you plan to follow it up with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
5) Predators – Tubi
Predators, featuring Adrien Brody, Alice Braga, and Topher Grace, takes place on a strange, faraway planet. A group of mercenaries, led by Brody’s character, find themselves hunted and must team up to survive. While it’s not a critically acclaimed film and feels very much like it came out when it did, Predators is a solid, action-packed addition to the Predator series. It’s especially enjoyable to see Adrien Brody take on an intense, action-hero role.
4) The Mist – Kanopy
Released in 2007, The Mist is a truly unsettling science fiction horror film that felt remarkably prescient. The story unfolds in a small Maine town hit by a severe storm. David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his son venture into town for supplies, only to find themselves trapped inside a grocery store when a dense fog rolls in. As terrifying creatures appear outside, the situation escalates, and a disturbing conflict brews within the store as someone insists on a sacrifice to calm the fog. 2) Galaxy Quest – Pluto TV
Without a doubt the funniest movie on this list (no offense to Hot Tub Time Machine!), Galaxy Quest is considered one of the greatest sci-fi comedies ever made. The film follows the cast of a canceled 1970s sci-fi TV show who now earn money from reruns and appearances at conventions. Their lives take an unexpected turn when they’re mistaken for real space heroes by aliens who believe the show was actually a historical record. These aliens need their help to fight against a cruel enemy holding them captive. Released in 1999, it remains as funny and clever today as it always was. It’s a truly original and satirical film, easily deserving a place on anyone’s must-watch list.
1) War Of The Worlds – Pluto TV
I have to say, even though critics liked ‘War of the Worlds’ more than general audiences, I genuinely enjoy it! It’s a really exciting and tense action thriller. The story follows Ray Ferrier, played by Tom Cruise, who’s trying his best to connect with his kids, Rachel and Robbie, after a tough divorce. They’re spending a weekend together when everything goes crazy – strange lightning strikes, and it turns out to be the start of an alien invasion! It’s a relatable story about a father trying to protect his children, but honestly, the best part is just how much fun it is to watch Tom Cruise run for his life while everything around him explodes. It’s a blast!
