Despite the surprising events at the end of season 8, Richard T. Jones will be back as Wade Grey, and all of the show’s main actors will also return for the next season, according to showrunner Alexi Hawley.
The season 8 finale of the show, which aired on ABC on Monday, May 4th, left Grey’s job security in question. Throughout the season, Grey had been working on a task force to capture assassin Monica Stevens, while Tim served as Watch Commander. Following Monica’s death in the finale, Grey’s future with the department is now uncertain.
I was reading a Deadline interview with Joel Hawley about the future of The Blacklist, and he basically confirmed what a lot of us were fearing. He said the core task force feels pretty much done now that Monica Rowan – Bridget Regan – is gone. He even called her storyline a bit of an homage to the original Blacklist premise, and without her, the team just doesn’t have a central figure anymore. It sounds like a big shift is coming, and honestly, it’s a little heartbreaking as a fan.
He explained that one of the first tasks for the Season 9 writers will be to determine what happens next with Grey’s storyline.
When asked if Richard Jones or any other main cast member would be departing before season nine, Noah Hawley confirmed that the current lineup would remain the same. He stated they are happy with everyone and are figuring out how to keep the whole cast, emphasizing Richard’s vital role in the show.
He added, “If we don’t just stand still and wait, what’s our plan? If we see this as a chance to do something new, I’m confident we’ll come up with a great idea.”

The season ended with a shocking turn of events for Tim and Lucy. Just after Tim proposed, they were suddenly kidnapped by people no one knew were involved.
But the show probably wouldn’t ever kill off a main character, Hawley assured fans.
He explained, “You can’t rule anything out.” He added that the show has always prioritized impactful, even shocking, moments, even if they upset viewers. For example, splitting up the characters Chen and Ford a few seasons back wasn’t popular with fans, but it was a dramatic choice.
He explained that he felt it was crucial for the story’s direction. While there aren’t any big plans in the works at the moment, he didn’t rule out the possibility of future surprises.
The Rookie airs in the UK on Sky Witness and NOW.
